It hadn't occurred to me until last night that one of the more powerful influences on me as a youngster was the children's book character, Pippi Longstocking. I haven't read Astrid Lindgren's books in ages, but when I think of them, it is with warmth and fondness ( Read more... )

I loved Pippi too (I remember trying very earnestly and with a large amount of wire to make my braids stand straight out from my head - just like hers), but the bigger childhood influences would have to be Laura Ingalls Wilder and Anne of Green Gables. Both plucky, independent girls, much like Pippi. Hmm ... looks like I have a type of favorite heroine. :)

I haven't read any Pippi but just watched some movie/show with her.

I don't think I can answer the question. I didn't really grow up reading classics. I read a lot of Judy Blume, etc. but never really thought about the main characters in those terms, I guess. Unless I'm just forgetting.

I loved Pippi too! I don't know what happened to my copies of those books, but now I want to look for them.
