Couldn't you learn Spanish where you are, maybe through a Spanish-language class or some sort of continuing education class?

I don't know what sort of credentials are required for teaching jobs, but personally, if I were hiring, what would matter to me is that the person I was hiring spoke Spanish, not where they'd learned it.

You would think that knowledge of the subject is what matters, but unfortunately that is not the case. Teachers unions are strong, and have made it so that mostly only education majors with "in-field" degrees can get the job. Speaking Spanish but earning a degree in elementary education will not allow me to teach spanish or give special instruction to children learning spanish without an ESOL (english for speakers of other languages) endorsement. Earning a degree in History won't let me teach a history class for more than a couple of years at a school that has been unable to hire a person with a degree in Social Studies education.
