Stay Classy, Republicans

"First of all, I wouldn't have Thanksgiving with a bunch of liberals. People in my family know not to bring up politics. I probably know more than they do, so I hit them up with facts, not feelings. Liberals think with their hearts, not their heads. If you want to make a liberal angry, start hitting them with facts ( Read more... )

Yeah, the cold, hard, calculating, Spock-like logic of the "Healthcare = Stalinism" crowd is totally like my Kryptonite.

There is definitely hilarity there.

As for the rest - come on, moral high ground.

I'm... pretty much there myself, which isn't good at all. It certainly makes visiting my parents a challenge.

It's a pretty nasty feeling, the realization that you're not being dealt with in good faith.

You're on a roll with the YouTubery. :)

I bet it's possible to communicate quite a lot with just YouTube embeds.

1. Facts like? I mean, the last time I looked, "they hate our freedom," "they think with their hearts, not their heads," "sand nazi," "Christian nation founded on Christian principles," and so on weren't facts.

2. I think with my wallet, not just my heart, thank you very much. As far as I'm concerned rightwingers may think with their Bibles, think with their hearts, and occasionally think with their heads, but I have yet to see anything that smacked of long term fiscal planning and a promotion of nationwide prosperity and fiscal growth ( ... )

"I'm going to have a holiday with people who think as I do, so as to avoid the unpleasant possibility of an argument erupting over the dinner table." That is entirely the wrong sentiment to hold, and smacks of the fear of being proven wrong, despite the bravado of "I know more than they do, so I'm going to keep repeating my facts and 'facts' until they give up in frustration, then claim their giving up proves the superiority of my position."

I hope she has a pleasant and friendly Thanksgiving, just so all that pent-up desire to ruin someone else's Thanksgiving stays inside and rots her from the inside.

I agree strongly with both halves of these. It's possible to have political discussions that aren't knockdown-dragout arguments, and if you can't bring yourself to be civil enough to have such with your own family, you're probably Doing It Wrong.

As for the other half - yes. Let us wish for our enemies more compassionate futures than they wish for us.

Indeed, on both matters. May our opposition always have pleasant and knowledgeable people to argue against, either to inform them and/or to prevent them from dragging someone else into the angry pit with them.
