Proposition 8 Trial: Who's Persecuting Who Here?

Jan 15, 2010 21:50

I've caught flickers of news from the ongoing Proposition 8 trial, and what I see makes me smirk. I'm cautiously optimistic about the trial as a whole. Part of this is because the anti-equality side is doing their usual pompous, stuck-up, snot-nosed American bullcrap that makes me want to go into full vulgarian mode. I won't - but I will mock ( Read more... )

What bugs me is they are falsely claiming harassment when what they are describing are perfectly legal boycotts.

Prop 8 supporters entire push for secret contributions and bigotry began after a businesses who had their quiet - not secret - giving to anti-gay groups publicized and boycotts were organized. Since then they've tried to frame not getting business from people who disagree with them as coercion, harassment, oppression, etc. when it is none of those things. It's irritating as Christian and homophobes call for boycotts all the time. Plus if they beleive they are in the right and the majority, why should they worry about losing the few dollars of the people they so want to oppress?

Also Hak-Shing William Tam? He's lying about being unprepared for the attetion. He was one of the sponsors of Prop 8, a founder of Protectmarraige.com and was fine with his anti-gay views being public as long as everything was going his way. He voluntarily joined the current case.

His current eagerness to get out clearly has more to do with how the case for Prop 8 may be hurt by his public letter to Chinese churches claiming the ultimate goal of gay marriage was legalizing sex with children.

Gee dude, if you didn't want attention, maybe you shouldn't have co-sponsored an electoral proposition and put your activism on the world wide web.

That's the current stance by the fucktard Bishop of Mexico. "Gay marriage leads to pedophilia."

AND PEOPLE ASK ME WHY I BECAME AN ATHEIST FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

This gives me hope that the whiny babies will just give up (trials are hard! And sometimes your fee-fees get hurt!) and let folks have equality and get on with the business of actually living.

Definitely yes. That's the best we can hope for from the US legal system sometimes - that it makes it too inconvenient to impose idiotic and vile worldviews on others.

By putting a face to one's opposition, it becomes that much easier to stop being mad at a nebulous Them and start finding specific Them to target. That said, they deserve just about every bit of antagonism, harassment, and non-violent demonstration anyone cares to throw at them. They deserve to be picketed and boycotted and subjected to shouting crowds at their businesses. Those churches that supported Prop 8 deserve to have angry protesters outside their services every day, shouting the messages of love and tolerance that their own religion espouses ( ... )

Yeah, public exposure, scorn, and mockery are definitely called for.

Perhaps that's what can be achieved. I wish we all had your writing skills, so we could flood the Letters paper, draw up media coverage, and otherwise push into the consciousness of most of America just what is going on here. If for no other reason than to make the bigots declare themselves so.

Boyo, you should go into politics. That essay would make Harvey Milk proud. Submit it for publication. Seriously.
