I'm really sorry to be all about me right now, but can anyone out there reassure me? My ob just told me that based on our bloodwork, we have a slightly elevated risk of Down Syndrome- 1/258 instead of 1/350 expected for my age. I know this is less than 1/4 of 1%, and I'm not inclined to get an amnio given the risk of miscarriage and how difficult ( Read more... )

I'm sorry Kris. I can't even imagine what you're feeling!

My BFF had numbers below "normal" for her age w/her 3rd child, I don't recall the actual numbers as her little guy is 2 now. What I do remember is that her numbers were a one in double-digit chance, so she was very concerned. They did have the amnio done and it turned out everything was fine. Like I said, her little boy is two now everything is fine.

I don't want to say relax, because I know that's not possible, but like a previous poster said, try to focus on how slight the risk is if that helps you.

HUGS!!!

It happened to my best friend from law school...her odds were actually even worse than that (think she is 31) and they really wanted her to do the amnio. She ended up doing the more detailed ultrasounds twice instead of the amnio, and they looked normal so they decided not to do the amnio. She was really worried about it. Her son was just born a few weeks ago, and he is completely fine. I hope that is a little bit reassuring.

I was going to say this same thing. There are usually soft markers or actual issues they can see on ddetailed u/s, so that might be a reassurance. Has your doctor offered this?
I have heard stories of "unfavorable" odds that turned out to be perfectly healthy babies.
Thinking of you!!

I know this is way easier said than done, but try and focus on the fact that the odds are on your side. Sending you lots of hugs and healthy baby vibes.

As far as I know, the fold measurement is the more important of the two parts of the NT test. I still wonder how accurate the blood test can be when it's a just a drop of my blood soaked into a piece of paper! (Don't know if yours was a finger prick test, but mine was.) Try not to read into it too much. Your chances of having a healthy baby are incredibly high, and hard as it may be, try to focus on that. You have beat so many odds so far, you are on a roll! And you will do the AFP test in a few weeks (which is a full blood draw), plus the anatomy ultrasound, and hopefully get some additional reassurance that everything's okay. Thinking of you and your little one...
