Summary: Sam sees the display at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Takes place during Newport tournament.
Author's Note: I have been wanting to write a John fic since The Match but Sam is as uncooperative as ever.
Sam has been to this tournament before, has walked around the Hall of Fame. Of course he’s seen players he’s spoken to many times treated with reverence here. Andy Roddick and the Bryans in particular are part of tennis history and he is friends with them, which is something Sam still has trouble wrapping his head around.
While Sam dreams of winning a Grand Slam, he can’t imagine fitting into the history of the game. He’s just this goofy guy who fell through a glass table and, according to others, dresses as if wandering in the dark. Perhaps someday there will be an aspiring player that looks up to him - though that makes him coldly laugh.
Sam hasn’t made his mark on the game yet. He may now reside in the top twenty but there’s little respect. He unfortunately hasn’t helped matters by letting everything get to him when he gets a chance to challenge on the big stage (exhibit A being the match he just played against Murray - ugh, if he’d won the first set who knows).
That has never been John, who seems to thrive on the big moments. He’s the one who beat Roddick at the US Open, which means so much more than the two times Sam has beaten Andy in smaller events.
His John is in the Hall of Fame, now known around the world and embraced by crowds who don’t even care about tennis.
Sam never told John that he’d taken Dan’s place in his heart once the intern decided to return to a normal life. That Sam needed that someone by his side and John stood by him.
When Sam stormed off at the French Open, he barely said two words to John before returning to the United States. Their bond hadn’t been mended but Sam had hoped a run at Wimbledon would accomplish that.
Then The Match That Refused to End took place and ruined the plan.
Sam is happy for John to have made it into history. He just hopes he’ll be allowed back into John’s world.
