Doctor Rodney McKay, genius extraordinaire, was confused. Simply and utterly confused and it annoyed him to no end. With the level of IQ he had, he should never be confused about anything and yet, right now, he was totally and thoroughly confused.
He switched his gaze from Doctor Elizabeth Weir to Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard trying to follow their conversation. He came to the conclusion that it was impossible and that annoyed him even more.
It was their usual weekly meeting to discuss duty rosters, planned off-world missions, planned explorations of the city and planned scientific experiments. Elizabeth and John had begun discussing something and McKay couldn’t, for the life of him, remember what it was about. He wasn’t getting any wiser from what they were saying either.
“But we could…”
“Yeah and maybe…”
“Of course…”
“Yes yes. And you think we could…”
“Oh, we could do that…”
And he was also getting very annoyed from the wordless gazing they did to communicate… like the few seconds of silence right now.
“Then of course there’s…”
“Ah, I’d forgotten about that.”
“Yeah, thought you would.”
“I was actually thinking about…”
“Perfect! If we could just…”
Did they even know they didn’t finish most of their sentences? It had grown worse over time and McKay had witnessed it every step of the way. He had thought it was cute in a way, especially because neither of them seemed to realize they were doing it. But it had also grown more annoying over time, especially now that he had lost complete track about what they were talking about.
“Oy! Would you mind speaking in whole sentences so I know what you’re talking about?”
He handed it to them; they got the whole ‘busted’ look down to an art. John looked sheepishly for a moment and he could swear Elizabeth blushed for a second. Elizabeth and John glanced at each other, suddenly seeming uncomfortable and McKay inwardly rolled his eyes.
It was also something he had witnessed, ever since arriving here a little over two years ago, that dance his two friends seemed to be doing. Constantly twirling around each other, coming closer in a way and yet never stepping over that invisible threshold. If they got close to the threshold they suddenly seemed to burst apart, seemingly afraid of the consequences. McKay knew there would be consequences for them. Not from anyone within the city because everyone he had talked to about this seemed to be waiting impatiently for them to get together. Everyone here realized John and Elizabeth were in love with each other… if only they would realize it themselves. No, the consequences would come from both their superiors, because even though there were no rules about civilians and soldiers, their fraternization would be frowned upon. But he also knew almost everyone in the city would back them up, creating enough leverage to shut the SGC and IOA up.
When they uncomfortably glanced away from each other again, McKay was tired of it. He just wanted his friends to be happy and the only way to accomplish that was to get them together. McKay decided it was about time for that to happen. He got up from his chair and glared at his friends.
“Alright. Let me just push you two thickheaded people onto the facts at hand. Sheppard, you love Elizabeth. Elizabeth, you love Sheppard. Now would you two please get over the awkwardness and make everyone in this city happy by kissing and getting together? But before you do so, please give me a moment to make my escape. Thank you very much!”
With that he walked out of the meeting room and closed the door behind him, leaving the two people inside completely flabbergasted.
Neither dared to look at the other and it stayed uncomfortably quiet for some time.
“Is he right?” Elizabeth finally asked, breaking the silence.
“Yes.” John admitted quietly, staring at his hands.
He heard her getting up from her chair and walk the small distance towards him. He was still thoroughly fixed on his hands, convinced she would let him down easy, saying Rodney was talking bs about her feelings for him.
To his surprise she kneeled down next to him and took his face in her hands.
“Rodney was right about everything.” She whispered and he felt his breath hitch.
It was then that she kissed him and he thought the earth stopped moving, time stood still and there were only him and her. It was nothing like the fast hard kiss they had shared when under alien influence. Instead it was soft, warm and filled with so many emotions he risked sensory overload.
He pulled her onto his lap, holding her tight to him. When she finally loosened her dead-lock grip on his lips, he took in a deep breath and nearly got knocked back by her typical scent that overwhelmed him.
“We owe McKay now, don’t we?” He whispered with a lopsided grin.
“Heck… you’re right.” She laughed and closed the distance between them again.
