How am I so far behind? How did I not know there is a *cure* for AIDS? It deals with genetics and while its not one which we can make into a vaccine yet, there are people who don't get AIDS. They have a mutation in their genes Delta 32 I think and if you have two mutated deltat 32 genes, you can't get AIDS. If you have one mutated copy then ( Read more... )

The ironic thing is that this was first detected in someone who is gay. Well, it kind of makes sense, I bet Reagan would be spinning in his grave, if he could remember the 80s or 90s. :P

The "cure" (though really it's prevention, and not cure) is great in theory, but we're so far away from mass-scale economically-feasible genetic manipulation of anything, let alone humans, that it's kind of stupid to focus on it now.

Now, for a more biochemical/engineering approach, I've always wondered why they don't just go for some sort of competitive inhibition... create something that will latch onto the receptors HIV uses, preventing HIV from binding, thus giving T-cells more opportunity to destroy the virus. That would be a cure. :)

Sorry, got a little dorky.
