I like it because it has the easier navigability of a smaller city with the benefits of being the state capital and site of a world class university--a zoo, good hospitals, cool shops and restaurants. It has gentrified over the years--the used bookstores have closed due to higher rents, replaced by wine shops, cheese purveyors, high-end boutiques.

Politiics have happened over the last few years, threatening the uni via loss of funding and hence of faculty. Not sure how it all will shake out. Madison was on my short list of "Kris's retirement home" possibilities, but now I'm not feeling it.

A shame - Kemp Town in Brighton, where I lived for many years, went the same way. I can't remember where we ate in Madison but I do remember a lot of nice restaurants.

Glad you had a good time, Kris--but yeah, travel can be tiring if trips come too close together.
