"Am I hideous, Jane?"
"Very, sir; you always were, you know."
-from charlotte brontë's jane eyre

i finished last night!
i still like heathcliff more than mr. rochester, but brenna is right; you pretty much forgive the novel all of it's sexist, racist, western-centric faults & weird religious overtones because jane is so cool.

And it is even okay that Mr. Rochester is kind of a goober. It is like, you know all those stories where is is okay that the female romantic interest blows (*cough* all stories), but the male lead is so cool that you are just glad he is happy? It is like that.

I hate the last couple pages though, where Jane is all like "I AM SO GLAD GOD DID ALL THIS I DID NOTHING MYSELF LA LA GOD GOD GOD" and I just want her to shut up and take some damn credit.

i dunno, brenna. i watched the movie "wuthering heights" today, which my mom kindly brought back to me in my drug-induced state. from where i was sitting i still, you know, liked it a lot. but i also was sitting on a lot of anesthesia so my judgment wasn't exactly sound (the first thing i did when i was led out of the operation room was demand my heart-shaped sunglasses, which i refused to take off for hours...)

but i will say that jane is way more interesting & fun to read about than cathy. also, my mom was all like "OMG KRISSY HEATHCLIFF IS A JERK" & i was like "what? oh wow he totally is. hmmm." i want to read agnes gray now, & reread wuthering heights with my critical feminist eye. also, i cannot read persuasion. i mean, i am going to & i have been but it already makes me so freaking sad it's not funny. maybe it's the painkillers making me cry every other page but MAYBE IT'S NOT ( ... )

Haha, Charlotte and Emily Bronte are like the Brenna & Krissy Feminist Avengers of Gothic Literature. I am Charlotte and you are Emily. Whenever the other one tries to talk they tell her to shut up.

Also, Persuasion totally made me cry, but I wanted to cry the most at the end when I was like "NO JANE AUSTEN I CAN'T TAKE THESE LIES THERE IS SO MUCH TRUTH IN THIS STORY BUT ALSO SO MANY LIES PLEASE JUST STOP IT"
