Well, now I'm in Kyoto and so far I'm one of maybe 5 gaijin I've seen. (I'm not sure if gaijin refers to just foreigner or white foreigner.) I'm staying in a guest house that's the whole tatami floor/futon deal, and it's very dark. Kyoto's weird. Supposedly people are generally disappointed with first impressions and then start to get the hype later on, so we'll see.
On the plus side, I saw no less than 64 geisha and/or maiko today. I kind of meandered my way into their huge-deal spring cherry dance in one of the ancient theatres, and there were 60 performing. Then I wandered around old Kyoto with the cherry trees and saw 3 maiko walking together and another one (perhaps a geisha?) walking a little bit down the street. That was AWESOME. I took pictures of both the dance and the ones on the street, even though I totally wasn't supposed to.
