If you're indoors, get into a door jam or under a solid table or desk. Stay inside to avoid falling debris from buildings. Don't look out the window, it might shatter inward. "Duck and cover" is what they teach us in elementary school. Protect your head, neck & vital areas. Shut off the gas if you smell a leak.
*nod* Yep, and if you're outside, get into as much of an open space as possible, away from trees and buildings and tall structures, getting into that same fetal-kneeling position with your hands covering your neck and your head tucked under.
The Red Cross website actually has some pretty good advice on how to prepare for and deal with earthquakes.
At school we were taught to do the following in an earthquake: if you're inside, try to get under a sturdy desk or table, or at the least, stand in a door frame. Avoid windows and lights, etc. If you're outside, get away from glass and all that, and just stay put until it passes.
If it makes you feel better, you might want to put together a little earthquake box to have in your house. Put some bottled water, water purification tablets, peanut butter/powerbars/etc, blankets, and so forth in a box. Good emergency stuff and might make you feel better, even though you almost certainly won't need it!
