Delicious Export (and saving other people's public bookmarks)

Dec 17, 2010 10:50

Rumours are circulating about the impending demise of Delicious.com. As someone who uses the site more regularly than I use any other (including livejournal) baring my email, I am looking to see which way fandom will turn in its wake. So, before I sign up for a million other services, I am content to wait.

Some links to alternative services can ( Read more... )

This is what I have been looking for. There are thousands of other people out there who will hopefully find and appreciate this.

Yahoo has spoken! Looks like they're not shutting Delicious down but they are looking to sell it.

You know, now that you need a Yahoo Id to get an account....

So I won't need to port all my bookmarks:) Of course, all of this panic may induce the rise of a fandom-conscious bookmarking project beyond the preliminary discussion already taking place, which would be awesome.

Yeah, people are going to be more cautious now.

Although, on the bright side, if Yahoo sells Delicious maybe the API will go back to something useful instead of the stupid Yahoo one.

This could be a good thing. Heh, maybe fandom could pool it's resources and buy it :p

This is awesome! Thanks. :)

I have a question though. I'm not terribly familiar with, well, programing in general. So when you say This is a nice, clean XML file so it should be easy to port this into any other format you're looking for., does that mean there's some way to make it easier to read? I'm not even sure how to start looking for information on .xml files. I read the wiki page and found it less then helpful.

Yeah, it isn't so simple for the beginner. Basically, I meant by clean XML is that it is well formed, all the brackets closed and each in a regular format so that it can be parsed into another format fairly easily. Including organized HTML. As it is, it has all the data in it, but might be less than readable by hand because it is meant to be used as a database.

I was thinking of creating a web page with javascript that could let you organize the resulting XML file by a hierarchy of tags and display as HTML with links for matching posts. Basically, a searchable, organized local copy of your delicious page. I already have something similar done for a personal automatic rec page generator, so this would be an extension. Would that be something you would be interested in using?

And, just out of interest, if you want some clearer information on XML than the wiki I recommend w3schools.

Sorry for a second post. I forgot to mention that Excel can open XML files as well if you want a quick, easy option.
