I say that you should go in for the interview, even if it's only for practice -- most gov't positions keep their info on file and can call you for up to a year after you apply.

I'm with takhys it doesn't hurt to go for an interview, even if they offer you the job, you don't have to accept. It's useful to get used to the process of applying, especially if you don't think you'll take the job because then the pressure is off and you can learn more.

Maybe you were like third choice and the candidates in front of you all had something wrong with them, hence the late interview...:P
