I applied for a job on a whim at the Intellectual Property Office many, many moons ago. Wrote an exam. Figured I did terribly, since I wasn't sure if I understood the directions and hadn't heard from them since. I say that you should go in for the interview, even if it's only for practice -- most gov't positions keep their info on file and can call you for up to a year after you apply.

I'm with takhys it doesn't hurt to go for an interview, even if they offer you the job, you don't have to accept. It's useful to get used to the process of applying, especially if you don't think you'll take the job because then the pressure is off and you can learn more.

Maybe you were like third choice and the candidates in front of you all had something wrong with them, hence the late interview...:P

And O____O at how hard it is to get the references.
