Last night we were nearly broke, but we managed to scrounge up enough money (mostly spare changes) to be able to afford Hungry Howie™'s $5 Value Menu ( Read more... )

I don't like doing that, though, because it annoys me when people do that to me at work. It's often used in lieu of the word "no", because they say you should avoid using the word "no" whenever possible in a business transaction over the phone (unless you're the customer).

For instance, someone will ask, "Are you hiring right now?"

Rather than saying "No," or "I don't know" (another phrase to be avoided when possible) I will say, "We're not taking any applications at this time."

So for someone to turn right around again and say, "Okay, but are you hiring?" It irks me.

I had just assumed (incorrectly, as it turned out) that her saying "What we do have is--" was the proper segue into keeping a customer when you would otherwise have to say "No, we do not. Sorry."

Obviously, had I known then what I know now, I would have pressed the issue. (Actually, had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have even had to ask her. ':P)

It's possible that she was required to say that at least once during the conversation and just wanted to get out of the way. I think you gave up too quickly. :) People who work phones are sometimes required to say some truly stupid things. At Honeybaked Ham one Thanksgiving I remember them having this really long opening spiel, which probably 90% of the people who call don't even listen to. And at Blockbuster we had to do it a lot, too.

"Thank you for calling Blockbuster Video on Winchester where you can get three new releases for $7.99 and My Big Fat Stupid Movie is guaranteed to be in stock, this is Jennifer how can I help you?"
"Is dis Blockbusta?"
"::sigh::"

And my mom told me when she worked for a hotel taking reservations, she always had to end the call with "Would you like to make another reservation?" So even if someone just called up to ask about amenities or something and didn't even make a reservation, she still had to say, "Would you like to make another reservation?"

I understand all that, and I didn't mean to make it sound like I was blaming her personally. I could tell by her wording that it was a canned response. Having been in similar situations myself, I can empathize with corporate inanity ( ... )

Oh no no no, see I said it's possible she was required to say that. I don't think it's probable. Maybe she was just on auto-pilot or something, but I don't think she was doing her job well and it would piss me off if it happened to me. I don't at all think you were overreacting or anything, if that's what you thought ( ... )
