Okay, so for those of you who've been living under a rock and/or ignoring the media, here's a pointless-but-brief recap ( Read more... )

Didn't we already thwart one Austrian's attempts at world domination?

It's almost funny that, in a comment to post saying "Enough with the dumb California election jokes", someone makes a dumb California election joke. Almost.

There is an issue with Arnold Schwartznegger's citizenship, as far as his becoming president goes: he can't, ever, short of a constitutional amendment. From article 2, section 1: "No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution shall be eligible to the office of President". Since Mr. Schwartznegger wasn't living here when the Constitution was adopted, he's out of luck.

Defensive yet facetious, with a twist of self-deprecation. krud42 August 23 2003, 12:03:16 UTC
For some reason I was thinking that if someone were a citizen for a certain number of years they might qualify. I didn't realize the expiration date for that was that long ago.

And in an unnecessary defense of my entry, I wasn't trying to say, "enough with the dumb California election jokes". I was trying to say, "this situation isn't as funny as it could have been."

I have no problem with people making sarcastic or observant jokes about the situation (which is something I perhaps strived toward but failed to accomplish). It's the "Ah'm going to be thah Govinator" stuff that grates on me.

Anyway, I am grateful for the constructive criticism.

(Unless it was meant as a condemnation for my jumping on the bandwagon while simultaneously decrying everyone who had done so before me, which I did intentionally, much like when I spend several paragraphs explaining why I don't have time to write an entry. It's what I like to call "Humor Through Deliberate Hypocrisy". I'm sure it'll be all the rage next year.)

I went to look up the specific article of the constitution, for my post, and there's a "you must be a resident for fourteen years" clause in the document. That threw me for a minute, until I realized it was only meant to apply at the time of founding. So, yes, I can quite easily see how you could've been uncertain.

In fact, had not a friend of mine commented last week that Schwarznegger could not be president, I don't know that I'd've remembered this bit of trivia. But I thought I would share it with you! I didn't mean it critically, either. You know I like your writing. :)

You, considering I am without TV and newspaper and barely have time to log on to the internet for FUN stuff, I don't really get much news. So, even though I haven't been living under a rock, this was quite informative. Kind of sick and twisted and all, but you know, it's California. It'll be interesting to see what happens, though.

(And I think you have to be a natural born citizen to be President.)
