[ Series ] : Princess Tutu
[ Canon Point ] : Rue will be waking up at Vatheon after the season 1 finale, episode 13; specifically, after she loses the pas de deux dance-off (and thus Mytho’s heart shard of love) to Princess Tutu and disappears.

[ History ] :

http://princesstutu.wikia.com/wiki/Rue#History - Specifics on Rue~

[ Personality ] :
Rue on the surface is a very high-class, somewhat selfish dancer at the top of her class at Gold Crown Academy. Specifically, she is a member of the special Advanced Class, and although there are other members who are in this class, it is Rue that all the girls seem to admire and strive to be like. It is Rue that all the girls are jealous of-and it is Rue who gets to date one of the most coveted guys at the Academy, a handsome boy named Mytho who is also an excellent dancer himself.

Going deeper, Rue is very much in love with Mytho-whose true identity is a storybook prince, who has shattered his heart in order to seal away his mortal enemy, the Raven, who escaped from said storybook. Without his heart, Mytho is actually devoid of any feelings; technically he does not love her at all because he doesn’t know what love is. Yet Rue is okay with this, constantly assuring him that he does love her, and constantly asks him to say it because it pleases her. She actually prefers that he remain this way, a puppet whom she can control. This is evidenced by the fact that she is actually scared and freaked out, once Princess Tutu actually starts to restore some of Mytho’s heart shards, and he regains some feeling and passion. Rue is scared, even though that feeling and passion was actually expressed for her, during a special, post-Fire Festival dance. Granted, Mytho also shows feelings for Princess Tutu, asking about her and wondering how she feels about him, so this is most likely a large factor as well, that led to Rue’s reaction. She feels so threatened by Princess Tutu, in fact, that this fear is what awakens her identity as Princess Kraehe, the daughter of the aforementioned villainous Raven from the storybook.

As Kraehe, she completely denies that ‘Rue’ even exists at all. She corrects Ahiru when she dares even calls her by the name. Rue is completely devoted to her father, the Raven, in this state and she desperately seeks approval from him, even though he treats her horribly-always telling her that she’s a crow, trapped in a hideous human body and how no one could ever love her except for him and Mytho, the storybook prince. She craves not only his approval, but Mytho’s as well, who also treats her horribly once he is under the influence of crow’s blood. This was Rue’s own doing-she soaks one of Mytho’s heart shards in the Raven’s blood, because he told her to, before it is returned to Mytho by Tutu.  He begins to turn against her as a result, because the blood corrupts Mytho. Despite this, though, her devotion to both of them goes so far that it corrupts her. It turns her into someone horribly manipulative, in order to convince people to give up their pure, beautiful hearts for her father to eat and keep him healthy-a requirement, if she wishes to keep even his love. A good example of this is when she fakes her leg being injured, so that Mytho may hold a contest for a new dance partner-the winner of which would be hypnotized into giving their heart to him.

As the series progresses, Rue learns some more and more information about her past-namely that she was never really the Raven’s daughter at all. She was simply a human girl, who was kidnapped by him when she was very young, and henceforth raised on his blood. She is very upset on learning about this, and she begins blaming herself for the pain Mytho is going through, due to the corrupted heart shard she gave him. He is essentially turning into a crow, and is prepared to give the Raven his heart once it is fully restored, since he is being manipulated by him. Rue feels so guilty about it, and loves him so much in fact that she refuses to bring Mytho to her father as he demands. She offers herself as a sacrifice instead, begging him to leave her prince alone; that she was happiest when she was with him, as Rue. Not Kraehe. It is this selfless act of hers that leads Mytho out of the Raven’s darkness-ultimately restoring his memory as Prince Siegfried, once his whole heart is restored-and it is this act that allows him to defeat the Raven and choose Rue as his princess.

In summary, Rue is a character with significant development over the Princess Tutu series. Although she spends most of it fit into the role of the villain, attempting to thwart Tutu’s attempts at restoring Mytho’s heart and being completely manipulative, she becomes a character that you can feel sympathy for, once she learns of her true place in the story. Just an innocent girl, who was used and lied to; tricked into doing the true villain’s dirty work. She does a complete turn-about, going from a selfish, demanding character (“Tell me that you love me!”) to a self-sacrificing, completely loving princess, who realizes that her prince’s well being is more important to her than her own, and this is what makes her one of the most interesting characters in the series.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Rue is part of the Advanced Class and is admired by many at Gold Crown Academy. You see it demonstrated many times, that she’s a wonderful dancer; the best of the best. When Anteaterina challenges her to a dance-off, for example, she is forced to choose different partner to dance with, since Anteaterina has manipulated Mytho (her usual partner) into dancing and being in love with her. So Rue chooses Ahiru, one of the worst dancers in the class, who is constantly dropped to the Probationary level-and she still manages to win and charm everyone. This shows that Rue is not only adaptive, able to dance with another partner on a whim, but also that she is good enough to carry the dance all on her own (in this case, the pas de deux), even if her partner is lacking. The powers she uses as Princess Kraehe are also nothing to sneeze at. She seems to be able to fly/teleport to very high heights with little effort, leaving behind only crow’s feathers-and since she’s still Rue, her dancing rivals that of Princess Tutu’s (even if she can’t always best her).

As for her weaknesses, Rue is not very good at making friends, despite how popular she is. Even though she has many admirers, only Ahiru ever really calls her a friend. Rue clearly spends too much time seeking the approval of others, particularly the Raven and the corrupted Mytho, as described above. Her desperation clouds her from the truth-that the Raven is not really her father, and that she is being used. She was stubborn to a fault about it, essentially convincing herself that only their approval matters. So much so that she dismisses the personality of ‘Rue’-the personality which, she admits later, she most enjoyed living!

Despite being a great and active dancer, Rue is also apparently somewhat out of shape. In the episode ‘Giselle,’ she is shown as being unable to keep up with Ahiru’s running as they search for Mytho. Ahiru, who is really a duck, shown to be quite clumsy! In the same episode, Rue also fails in saving Mytho from Giselle, who attempts to take him to the world of the dead; she fails because her dance is unable to charm him away from Giselle, since she gets tired too quickly and is unable to keep up with her. Princess Tutu must step in instead, which annoys Rue greatly.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Nothing specific about Rue’s role in the show, but some Vatheon specific stuff, I guess: at the canon point I’ve taken her from, Rue still transforms into Princess Kraehe-and probably still thinks of herself as Kraehe. Her powers will be diminished, though, obviously; she won’t be able to retain the form for long, and it will take a lot more out of her than it normally would. (She’ll also probably try to hide her identity, anyway, keeping up the Rue façade-so she won’t be introducing herself as Kraehe or anything, or transforming often.)

[ Sample ] :
The first thing Rue notices upon waking up is that her head hurts. More so than usual, even. This kind of thing had been happening lately, the blackouts, the memory loss, but-no, no this isn’t like that, is it? No… she remembers everything: from the lake where it all took place, to Drosselmeyer who set up the stage, to the dance that Princess Tutu used, to steal her prince away. She growls at this, immediately becoming cranky as she stands up to compose herself, looking down at herself and the clothes she’s wearing. Her Gold Crown Academy uniform. So… she’s no longer transformed then…

“Wet? That’s impossible. I don’t remember falling into that lake. Only that useless knight-”

She tugs at her clothes, realizing now that they’re completely soaked, along with her long, wavy hair. It was everywhere. She feels uncomfortable; disgusted, even, since she knows she can’t dance like this, and her ballet shoes are surely ruined. She doesn’t even want to look and see the damage. She can’t bear it. She doesn’t need to anyway-she can feel it.

It isn’t until then, however, that she looks up, and realizes she’s got bigger problems. All the strange looking vendors-the people, the surroundings she doesn’t recognize, all the water that was suddenly in the sky…!

“This… this isn’t Gold Crown Town at all! Where am I?”
