He was a criminal.  Not even licensed as a medical practitioner, he practiced an illegal procedure without a medical license and blatantly did so on national television.

… And yesterday it was announced that for his deeds he would receive The Order of Canada:  Canada's highest honour, reserved for Canadians who have demonstrated a "lifetime of ( Read more... )

Amen! My church has been collecting signatures. I'm amazed at how many people have refused to sign prolife petitions though. O_o

Not to rain on your post, which is well written, but please verify some facts before stating them as fact.

"Not even licensed as a medical practitioner, he practiced an illegal procedure without a medical license and blatantly did so on national television."
True: Abortion was illegal
False: He worked in Montreal as a general practitioner for nearly twenty years

Now, that, coupled with the laws of a democracy (Of course the descision was not unanimous: A democracy works based on a majority, unanimous descisions are not needed) state that what he did was set the country up to progress in terms of laws and ideas.

The country's medical system is what has stalled and not introduced anything new since 1988.

I could be mistaken about the medical license aspect of it. I was under the impression that the University of Western Ontario had given him and honorary doctorate because he didn't have one. My apologies if I'm wrong on that account.

Regarding unanimity, every other recipient of the award has been unanimously agreed upon and been a Canadian that all other Canadians can respect and honour. Many wonderful nominations have been turned down in past decisions, and it strikes me as highly backhanded for such a highly contested individual to be granted an award when the result is to bring further division among Canadians.

Which majority are you speaking of? The majority on the board passing the decision? Or the majority of Canadians? When given the opportunity to speak in various newspaper polls on this subject, Canadians showed a tremendous divide - far from a unified voice in support and far from a majority in favour of such an award being granted.

It's not up to the medical system to pass or introduce new laws. That's the job of our MP's. When the Supreme Court struck down the old laws in '88, even the most pro-choice of the judges stated that there should be a law to replace the ineffective ones, but that it was up to parliament to enact these laws.

Hmm interesting. I'm always up for a conspiracy theory. Makes for entertaining reading, but I don't suppose it matters much in the long run. I'm much more concerned with who that man is today and what he's doing to and in my country.
