It wasn't unusual for Krycek to be up late, especially when he was trying to piece something together, nor was it odd for Jake to have given up and gone to bed much earlier.
Krycek stared at his computer screen, rereading the message in his email inbox for what had to be the 50th time.

By the time he finished, it was later than he'd expected and colder than he'd expected. After the weekend, he was twitchy and had checked a pistol out to take with him into town. Just in case.
He headed back to the weapons locker to check it back in before going to bed.

He was particularly eager to make sure that didn't happen again.

He jerked to a stop when he saw movement, still jumpy from the trolls, and held back so he could look but wouldn't be seen.

He didn't want anyone seeing him and asking awkward questions, or letting this get back to Jake. He didn't even know if he'd be back anytime soon and additional pursuit wouldn't help at all.
Seeing no one, he slipped into the room.
