Other SD Firestorm 2007 updatesUpdates are sorted in reverse chronological order, since I finally realized that people would be sick of scrolling down for new info.
Evening updates can be found in the
23rd October - Part 3 post.
5:57p: Julian residents have been advised to prepare for an evacuation.
And not news, per se, and in fact
cloudmistress mentioned this last night but I totally forgot to mention it - NASA has some
satellite images of the wildfires. Yes, the smoke can be seen from space.
5:52p: No more donations needed at the Encinitas Senior and Community Center.
5:39p: Missed this earlier: The voluntary evacuation order has been lifted for Carlsbad residents living south of Palomar Airport Road.
5:31p: Until further notice, Rancho Bernardo residents will no longer be allowed back into their homes to retrieve medications.
5:23p: The city's list of homes was
reposted by
skepticpirate, as the city site may be inaccessible due to high traffic.
Per
mamaroxie, the city of Poway posted a
list of known structures lost earlier this afternoon.
There is a danger of the Rice fire merging with a fire across the county line (I didn't catch the name, did anyone else?)... they're watching out for this.
5:20p: Earlier this afternoon, the city of San Diego posted a
list of fire-damaged homes in Rancho Bernardo. List is not yet official. Not sure how this compares to the list that
CBS8 has up, I haven't done an item-by-item comparison yet.
5:18p: Poomacha fire is burning up South Grade Road on Palomar Mountain. Firefighters are setting up backfires and making a stand at at State Park Road, at the top of the mountain.
5:16p: Rancho San Diego yet again! Mandatory evacuations for the following areas: from Del Rio Road EAST to Steele Canyon Road, from Fury Lane SOUTH to Millar Ranch Road and Millar Anita Road.
5:11p: Witch Fire at 200,000 acres.
The county fires have caused 5 fatalities as of this time.
4:58p: Harris Fire at 72,000 acres, with at least 1,500 homes threatened.
Even more clarification for Rancho Santa Fe: areas under evacuation are those to the 94, between Jamacha Boulevard and Jamul.
3:15 maps backed up:
SD County overview,
Witch Fire and Rice Fire,
Harris Fire.
Official "homes destroyed" list still being compiled.
4:33p: All Solana Beach evacuation notices have been lifted; residents may return to their homes.
The SD County emergency has a fire area map, up to date
as of 3:15p, though of course the site and map load like ass. Working on downloading and backing up the map.
4:12p: UT fireblog says that Rancho San Diego evacuation is in effect after all, though the system likely did call more people than actually necessary.
67 from Ramona to Lakeside is under mandatory evacuation, as of a half hour ago or so.
Also under evacuation is an area south of the Sweetwater River, west of Lawson Creek, and north of Lyons Valley Road. This includes north Jamul.
East Chula Vista residents can return to their homes.
3:21p: Rancho San Diego is NOT under evacuation - the evacuation notices were caused by an error in the reverse 911 system.
2:59p: Highway 94 closed in the Rancho San Diego area, at Jamacha, from Steele Canyon to Forest Gate and at Old Canyon Road.
Not much new real news for the past half hour or so, not that I could find... but if you caught anything I missed, please say so!
In the meantime, I backed up the 12:15p map to my Flickr account because, well, I don't trust the SD Emergency site to load consistantly. See the following:
SD County overview,
Witch Fire and Rice Fire,
Harris Fire.
2:21p: Mandatory evacuation of Rancho San Diego; evacuees should go to Qualcomm.
Pine Hills Road and Wynola Road in Julian are also being evacuated; these evacuees should move to Borrego Springs High.
2:19p: Donations needed at Granite Hills High - prepackaged foods, cots, blankets, toiletries, etc. Food for horses and other animals also needed.
2:15p: 241,000 acres burned so far in San Diego County. 1200 homes destroyed, 530 damaged.
2:09p: La Jolla Reservation under mandatory evacuation as of 1:30ish. Evacuees are to go to Borrego Springs.
Recommended evacuation of San Elijo Valley in place.
I missed this earlier today, but there's an evacuation in Encinitas: Olivenhain, east of Rancho Santa Fe Road and north of El Camino Del Norte.
At least 17 homes have been burned in Del Dios.
Chula Vista fire situation now markedly improved after water drops - immediate threat to Chula Vista has been averted.
The Poomacha Fire is now 23,000 acres and heading for Mt. Palomar.
1:15p: Evacuation orders are being issued to 1,095 Harmony Grove households. Haven't seen whether it's voluntary or mandatory yet.
1:08p: SD Emergency has posted a
fire map as of 12:15p.
1:06p: The Harris fire has split into two directions. One is heading North toward Otay Lakes and the other is headed south. The northeast portion of Chula Vista is currently threatened.
12:59p: Reminder - Rancho Bernardo is STILL under evacuation. They are permitting people to return to retrieve medications only, but you must have proof of residency, you will be accompanied by SDPD, and you will not be allowed to take anything other than your medications.
12:40p: They've lost power to one of the pumping sites in the Ramona municipal water district. They've called in for some generators, but it will take some time for them to get set back up, and at this time there's no water service. No timeframe has been given for water restoration. Once water is restored, residents will need to boil water for safety reasons until cleared by health inspection.
12:36p: An official list of destroyed Rancho Bernardo homes will be posted on
sandiego.gov later today, probably around 2:00p.
12:27p: Two new fires in Camp Pendleton.
The news conference just confirmed the reopened areas in Poway. Again, the Poway city website has a
map of these areas.
12:19p: SD city will probably not allow residents back into any other areas for the next 25 hours.
For the Harris fire, efforts are being focused on the western portion.
Some structure loss reported in Deer Horn Valley, but figures are not yet available.
12:17p: Poomacha fire at 3,000 acres.
12:13p: NBC7/39 is covering a news conference, which just confirmed two reopened areas. One is in Del Mar Heights: south of Via de la Valle, west of Interstate 5, and north of Torrey Pines State Beach. The other is south of Poway: south of Beeler Canyon Road, west of Sycamore Canyon Road, east of Interstate 15 and north of MCAS Miramar.
All three flames of the Rice Fire are still active; the most active is in the Santa Margarita drainage basin.
