Disney vs Miyazaki

So Alvena, being five, loves pink and princesses and has Disney Princess curtains--and has no clue who any of them are. She did see "The Frog Prince" shortly after it came out (a long time ago, for her; I doubt she remembers it) and hasn't seen the others at all.

Of course Mike has no interest in Disney princesses, so, since he's at another base ( Read more... )

Yes! I love the animation style so much more in Miyazaki-like, you can tell his characters apart for one thing-but what really makes me happy is just so much agency his female characters have, even when they're on average younger than Disney's. They are fully realized people and not interchangeable (well, neither are his male characters, but unique male characters are much more common).

Hee - I think maybe the original tales were formed in a different cultural context where people did just enter other people's homes? What am I talking about! More likely there was an original version where Snow White was captured, abused and forced into slavery by the dwarves! I don't think they were meant to be nice, these tales.

I think the teenager who rearranged your pantry probably thought she was being really helpful and nice - she is too young to realize it might upset someone to have their things rearranged, maybe...maybe she had been taught or told by adults to look for things she could do to help (girl guide like)?

I didn't realize your Alvena is only 5. SO she was only about Buggle's age or younger when you helped me when I was pregnant! It still feels like Buggle was only just born so it must have been all recent for you too!

Yup, I think so; her birthday is coming up in less than a month now; she was born in 2009.

It seems to be an American thing, not necessarily a fairy tale one. If you're looking for it you'll see it all over the place. People go by someone's home, they knock, no one answers, and then they open up the door (assuming it's unlocked, which it usually is in Canada, especially before dark) and go in! It's like so long as the door is unlocked, it's perfectly acceptable to wander in if you call out "Hello?" a couple of times in the first ten feet! The only people going, "Oh well, no one's home, let's go," are the people who don't want the door to be answered in the first place, and they will always be restrained by their friend from leaving who, if the door isn't then answered, will open it up and go inside, dragging the recalcitrant friend with them.

SO weird.
