“The fire? Already…But…I…Don’t…I don’t understand…This wasn’t meant to have happened yet…” Nino whispered shakily looking up at the once beautiful castle that was now scorched heavily with the top layers completely destroyed. The walls that had been light grey were blackened with smut marks. Temporary roofing had been added to the lower floors but mostly people had been moved to the village. Masaki’s inn was full to almost bursting and was filled with a lively atmosphere.
“…You knew about the fire?” Jun asked from his position at his side and Nino flushed quickly biting on his lip realising that he had forgotten himself.
“I…I heard that Akaike…He mentioned something about it…” He breathed bowing his head at the advisor before making his way through the crowd his stomach clenching as he wondered if this was really it. If it was then it was wrong, all of it was wrong, the fire left no survivors and yet here they all were. People looked at him strangely as he moved but he ignored them keeping his eyes focused on the beautiful man that was serving them all. His friend looked tired and worried and Nino doubted that he had slept at all. Sho was at his side his arm wrapped in bandages but looking otherwise unhurt and was grinning at his lover with love clearly in his eyes. Jun moved to join them and then hesitatingly he kissed both on their lips and they responded slowly and just as shyly. It was a strange sight to witness but Nino didn’t have much time to think about it as he was soon met with a scream from his friend who had dropped a bowl and was staring at him with his mouth opening and closing a few times before he ran to him.
“Nino! Take…You’re back! I knew that you wouldn’t be hurt! That your purpose was more than Matsumoto! You’re not hurt are you?” Masaki asked in a rush after he had he had hugged him and pressed a rain of kisses to both his cheeks.
“No…Not even wounded pride…Matsumoto was very sick when I arrived…In fact it would have been better if he were dead…The process of healing him was not a good one…He was in pain for most of it…” Nino sighed remembering the screams that the lord had let out as he fought the infection. It had been hard and a lesser man would have had his heart give out through most of it but Matsumoto, like his own beloved lord, had fought with all he had and he deserved the life that he had won back. A man beside him didn’t seem to share his view as he spat;
“He deserved more…”
“…Maybe but I was not the one to give it…Plus how could I take a life? I am a healer…All I have ever wanted to do is heal people…”
“He killed my boy!” A woman screeched reminding him of the cook who had had spent a few hours with each day. She had shared stories of her son and cried for a lot of their time together.
“…And my lord killed the son of a woman in Matsumoto castle…Instead of casting blame or demanding an eye for eye perhaps you should actually learn something…War is never the answer…You are not different from Matsumoto or Akaike…If it had been him instead of my lord who had found me and Jun and Sho brought me here I would have healed Ohno just the same…” Nino whispered shakily aware that he was being watched by everyone in the inn. “Matsumoto is a monster…But he still cried in his sleep…He pleaded…Bargained…Begged the forgiveness of his brother…Of his sister…A life is a life…”
“Well said my little healer…” Ohno’s voice whispered against his ear holding his hand and tugging him into his body “And I agree but right now…I have missed you…Let me show you how much…”
