“Let’s go out tonight” Satoshi said hopefully looking over at his wife who was doing paperwork in the corner. The tickets he had secured for their anniversary in his pocket. The ballet had been something that his wife had mentioned wanting to go and see and he had been happy when he had been able to get seats at the front. He wanted it to be a surprise but he suspected that he had done the wrong thing when she looked up at him with a glare on her face.
There was a pair of glasses perched on her nose and a pen tucked behind her ear. A stray strand of hair had escaped from the rough bun that she had put it into. There was a time when he would have wanted to stroke the hair away and push it back behind her ear now all he wanted was to take a pair of scissors and cut it off. Earlier, when her co-worker had been around she had been dressed to the nines, her make-up almost flawlessly painted onto her face wearing a pencil skirt and a blouse that was just on the right side of being too tight. Now she was in a t-shirt and a pair of PJ’s. Her face had been scrubbed clean and her mouth was pinched in a way that suggested that she was going to be saying something unpleasant again.
“I already told you that I can’t tonight, somebody has to make sure that we don’t go under and you’re not going to do it” She snapped waspishly and Satoshi tried his best not to physically recoil at the words. He wasn’t the most successful business man in the world, he knew that. He had never been the type of person that would push himself further up the ladder to success. He had been quite happy to be the one that stopped working to take care of their only daughter knowing that his wife’s wages had been more than his. The only thing that he didn’t enjoy was the sharp remarks that his wife gave.
“Okay” He mumbled getting up from his chair and leaving the room without another word. He could hear her muttering all the way to their bedroom but he determinedly ignored her pulling open the small cupboard that held the limited amount of clothes that he was allowed and pulled out his nicest outfit. It was just a pair of black trousers and a blue shirt but he supposed that it would work well for the ballet. He dressed quickly and then tussled out his hair the best that he could with his fingertips. He avoided looking at himself in the mirror but decided that it was going to be the best that he could get it.
“Where are you going?” His wife asked sharply when he came back into the living room to collect his coat and the tickets from where he had hidden them. He contemplated telling her about the tickets knowing that there was a very real chance that the argument would just blow over if he did but, like all the times before, it would be like sticking a plaster over a bullet wound and he was tired of it. He barely looked at her as he muttered;
“Out”
“I thought I said that you couldn’t…”
“You said that you couldn’t” He growled grabbing his wallet and cutting her off before she could snarl at him again. “I’ll be back late, there’s no need to wait up for me”
“Satoshi you’re not going out”
“I think you’ll find that I am” He hurried to the door and then slammed it closed behind him cutting off another long-winded rant that she might have started. His legs felt a little like jelly as he made his way down the street to the train station. He was early but he could buy himself a drink and enjoy it for the first time in a long time.
