Jun watched the florist carefully arrange the flowers into a plain vase. His eyes had the look of complete focus arranging a large fiery red on in the centre before choosing ones to go around it. When he had been at school there had been ikebana classes and even some competitions but they had never felt as amazing as this. Even the third-year students seemed to have just been sticking random flowers into pots and hoping for the best. Nino on the other hand made it look like art without looking ostentatious. His fingers, small, chunky, with stains decorating them appeared to stroke the stems as they were being placed into the vase as though he were willing them to stand straight and shine to the best of their ability. The flowers that had been picked reminded him so perfectly of his mother that he could see why Nino had asked so many infuriatingly personal questions.
“There you go” Nino smiled when he was finally finished sliding the vase and flowers over to him and Jun was caught by the scent which had an overwhelming nostalgic feeling to them. Before he realised what was happening he found himself closing his eyes and breathing it in, instantly remembering when he had played in a wild field with his mother as a child with so much clarity it was as though he had been shown a video of that moment. His eyes opened again when he heard a chuckle from behind the counter and was gifted to the sight of Nino being surrounded by the flowers. It was almost like a moment from a manga and he had to blink and pull his face away so that he didn’t blush like an awkward teenager.
“Wow, the scent is incredible” He mumbled sounding as though he was speaking through a lump in his throat.
“Of course, flowers aren’t just about how pretty they are. It’s rather insulting to them to hear that you know” Nino smirked a little bit his fingers caressing the petals of the flowers for a moment and Jun wanted to roll his eyes but he was still a little jerky from the memory “They smell even better when they’ve been sprayed a little with water. I hope your mum likes them”
“You practice Ikebana?”
“I teach, ikebana, are you planning on studying it?” Nino asked though his eyes were doubtful and were back to looking irritated or uncomfortable as his fingers tapped out a song on the counter.
“I just wondered if you did more than just worked in a tiny flower shop”
“Do you want a broken nose with your flowers?” The florist growled a little before muttering “This shop belongs to my dad, I’m just helping him out while his sick. I have my own classes”
Nino reached under the counter and pulled out a small card handing it to him with his head cocked to one side. Jun took it slowly noting that it was decorated with the most delicate looking paintings of flowers that he had ever seen and he sensed that they had been painstakingly done. They were almost as beautiful as the real flowers though they lacked the scent. The name was printed in a bold print and Jun couldn’t help but think that it matched the man in front of him as it was pretty but prickly.
“Did you make your cards?”
“No, my friend did” Nino answered with a shake of the head looking to the door almost urgently “The rains stopped for a bit you should be able to leave now”
“Um, how much? For the flowers?” Jun hummed reaching into his pocket for his wallet and Nino gave a shrug blinking slowly as if he had forgotten about the flowers. Eventually he hummed;
“I guess 2800.00yen”
“Okay, thank-you” Jun paid his money and then gathered his flowers doubting that he would ever see Nino again but it seemed that the universe was determined that he would.
