The Art of flowers part 3

Jun stared at a basket of flowers in the middle of the conference desk noting how badly the display had been put together and how the scents were wasted clashing against each other. The flowers Nino had arranged had almost made his mother cry as each one had been her favourites and he wanted to know how Nino had known such a thing just from the questions that he had asked.

“Matsumoto-san, are you listening?” His boss, Sakurai Sho, asked sounding more than a little put out that it didn’t appear that he was. Jun blinked looking away from the flowers so he could look at the man he considered to be more a friend than a boss and Sho’s eyes narrowed just a little before he rolled them slowly and said, “I was asking for ideas on a company event, do you have any?”

“Ikebana” He mumbled in an almost dazed way, honestly not expecting the word to come tripping out of his mouth the way it did but it was the first thing that came to mind and he still had the prettily decorated business card tucked away in his pocket. He had meant to hand it over to his mum in case it was something that she wanted to do with her neighbourhood committee but as it was it wasn’t an altogether horrendous idea for a team bonding exercise. At least not as bad as the cooking classes Sho had arranged for a week last year. He had enjoyed the cooking aspect of it but having to eat Sho’s makes had made him lose his appetite for a few weeks. At least with flowers he wouldn’t have to eat them.

“Excuse me?”

“Ikebana, sir, I think that it would be a great experience for us all to learn new skills and it is meant to be character building” He mumbled with a shrug noting that a few of the others around the table were looking somewhat agreeable to the idea and he imagined that it was because they were remembering last year and the noodles with as much displeasure as he was. “I ran into an ikebana teacher the other day when I was buying flowers. He gave me his card” He hummed ignoring the undignified gasps from his co-workers, he was almost sure that he heard an actual ky’a as well. He pulled the card from his pocket and slid it over the table to Sho who was looking a little confused but accepted it “It wouldn’t hurt to give him a call and see if he would be prepared to do that kind of thing”

“Ninomiya Kazunari”

“Nino-kun?” The accountant said with a bright voice her cheeks growing a little warm when everyone turned to look at her. She was well known for having a nervous disposition and preferring numbers to people and she shifted awkwardly around in her chair before taking off her glasses and rubbing her nose. “Sorry, I remember reading in a magazine, he was junior champion when he was at school or something”

“Really? I can understand why, his arrangement was sublime, my mother enjoyed it” Jun responded doing his best not to roll his eyes as there was another little twitter on the opposite side of the table. “I could give him a call and see what he says”

“If nobody else has any ideas?” Sho asked looking at the seven other faces around the table. The all shook their heads and Jun was surprised that he was almost glad. He pushed the feeling away and took the card back from Sho.

“I’ll call him now. It might be that he doesn’t agree” He mumbled heading out of the conference room and down the corridor into his own office. There was a strange feeling in his chest as he dialled the number and he hoped that the man wouldn’t be as difficult or as bratty as he had been in the shop. It took a while before there was an answer and when the phone clicked into life he was greeted by a brisk;

“Ninomiya Kazunari, how can I help?”
