Actually, it could be anything from bad strings to that you just need to ease them in. They haven't been in a regular-strung state and so you need to "train" them to being strung strings.

Rather than investing in fine tuners at this time, you may want to invest in some "peg drops" or "peg compound". You won't need to slaughter those nice pegs by pushing so hard (and eventually wearing down their usefulness at all) as the peg drops will help create friction between them and the peg holes.

stuff you didn't for/didn't as my opinion on at all:
Remember to rosin your bow before playing. That is what creates friction between the horse hair and the strongs. Also, don't over tighten the bow. And remember to wipe your violin down after playing else that rosin will do bad things to the finish and the strings.

Turn your torso, not your neck.

Yes... it is a 5 string...and as I have learned, it is a bitch to hit the middle strings without hitting the ones next to it.
