Kame lifted his head when he heard the front door open, but settled back on his paws when Taguchi's loud voice announced he was home. Nothing could beat taking a long, luxurious catnap with the sunshine warming his fur. He hadn't felt this well rested in months. He knew he would have to be more proactive in finding a way to reverse his… condition, but at the moment, his cat brain was in full, lazy control. He curled up in his spot on the side table positioned by the window.
"Kame? I'm home!"
Kame mewled and turned his head away. He heard him already. Time to go back to sleep.
"Kame? Where are- oh." Taguchi immediately went silent and his footsteps became louder and louder as he neared Kame's resting spot. Kame heard Taguchi chuckle - it was a soft, familiar sound now and only made him sleepier.
"Cute," Taguchi whispered. His fingers caressed Kame just behind his furry ears, and without meaning to, Kame purred. He couldn't help it! Taguchi's fingers were like magic.
"I guess your surprise can wait," Taguchi continued quietly.
Taguchi's fingers fell away and Kame's mind cleared enough to comprehend his words. Surprise? He perked up and meowed. What kind of surprise?
"Hey, I thought you wanted to stay in your shell a bit longer," Taguchi said. He scratched Kame under his chin, eliciting yet another purr from Kame's kitten body. Just a little more to the- no! No! Damn those magic fingers.
Kame nipped at Taguchi's fingertips as he sat back on his haunches. Where was his surprise? He looked up at Taguchi in what he hoped was a haughty manner.
"Okay, okay," Taguchi said, chuckling. "Hold on."
Kame watched his bandmate disappear around the corner into the hallway. He wondered what it could be. Not a cure for his predicament; otherwise, Taguchi would've woken him up right away. At the very least, he hoped it wasn't squid. He whimpered at the memory of his impromptu bath.
Shaking his head, Kame leapt from the side table to a nearby cushioned chair, then to the carpeted floor. He stretched his back and yawned as the last tendrils of sleep left him. Kame hid underneath the coffee table and went around in a circle a few times before lying down. What was taking so long? He flicked his tail impatiently.
A curious scent filtered through the air. His nose twitched. A bit… minty?
Kame crawled out to find Taguchi pouring a mysterious substance on the floor. It looked to be bits of dried grass and leaves. So, Taguchi's surprise for him was… potpourri? Kame wondered if rolling his eyes would work even in this form.
"You wanted your surprise, didn't you?" Taguchi asked. He lay down on his stomach on the floor.
He couldn't have gotten him a ball of yarn? Maybe a toy mouse? How about- Kame got a big whiff of something absolutely heavenly as Taguchi held out his palm. Kame leaned forward for another sniff, but Taguchi dragged his hand away. Kame followed. He needed more of that smell. Aside from the mint, he detected bits of lemon and grass. Separately, they were very ordinary smells. But together…
Taguchi stopped at the pile on the ground and tipped the bits from his palm onto Kame's whiskers. If he were in his right mind, Kame would have hissed in indignation. Instead, he was all too preoccupied with the delectable scent luring him in. The closer he got, the stronger the smell, and the more he had to have it.
Kame pounced on the pile, the scent stronger than ever as it clung to his fur. Contact with his skin spurred him on as he rolled around in it, rubbing anywhere he could - on his back, stomach, paws. Did mints always have this intoxicating effect? He couldn't get enough! He tried licking it and that was even better. Then he chewed some of it and even pawed at the ground, rolled this way and that, needing more of that smell surrounding him as much as possible. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he wondered if they had cologne in this scent. Some company would make a killing.
Distantly, Kame thought he heard Taguchi laughing. He must be having the time of his life because Kame sure was! Why had he never rolled around on the floor more as a human? It was so much fun!
Kame followed another trail of the minty, lemony substance and found himself mewling up at Taguchi's smiling face. Taguchi had his chin propped up on his folded arms, still laid out on the floor.
"I should've gotten you catnip sooner," Taguchi said, petting Kame's back.
So it was catnip. He should've known. Kame purred and licked his bandmate's nose. Taguchi giggled, actually giggled. Kame would've made a note to tell the others if it wasn't something they had already all heard before.
Taguchi sprinkled more catnip on the carpet and Kame leapt on it. Had to have it, had to have it! He rubbed more of it into his fur, dragging himself along the ground and ignoring Taguchi's booming laughter.
Hmph. Taguchi was missing out on a good thing. His loss.
