“I have something for you.”

Kame lifted his head curiously from the couch pillow, recalling Taguchi’s previous surprise. Once the high from the catnip had worn off, he had been knocked out for the rest of the day. He wondered if what Taguchi had planned would be as… enlightening an experience.

He heard Taguchi rummaging through the closet near the front door before his head popped out from around the corner. Taguchi jumped out with a cheery “Ta-da!” He held out a cushion-lined basket. “It’s a cat basket!”

Kame blinked. A cat basket. A cat basket? What was he? A ca- ok, that was besides the point. Buying a cat post was fine. He had to keep himself entertained after all. But a basket for sleeping? What was that? It was as if Taguchi was resigning himself to the fact that Kame was going to remain a cat forever.

Taguchi brought the basket thing into his bedroom and Kame followed him despite himself. Taguchi set it down beside his bed and patted the inside. “It’s really soft! Come on, feel it,” he said, gesturing for Kame to come closer.

Kame approached it warily and placed a tentative paw inside. Okay, so it was really soft. He jumped in and lay down. And fluffy.

Taguchi laughed and scratched Kame under his chin. The purr was practically automatic now. “Glad you like it,” he said.

I never said that. Kame glared at him, but Taguchi was already on his feet and walking away. Then Kame heard the water running and knew Taguchi was getting ready to take a shower.

Hmph. It didn’t matter if the basket was nice and velvety and really rather comfortable. He wasn’t a ca- again, not the point. Kame hopped onto Taguchi’s bed, where he had spent most nights since he had turned into a feline. He circled Taguchi’s pillow and plopped down right on top of it.

Yawning, he made himself more comfortable and rested his head on his paws. Everything smelled of Taguchi. This is more like it. He sighed and drifted into sleep.

Kame woke in the middle of the night, feeling like something was wrong. He looked around for the familiar sight of the top of Taguchi’s head, but instead saw Taguchi’s slippers. Blinking, he realized he was nestled in the cat basket under a light blanket.

Oh no, he didn’t.

Taguchi moved him to the basket while he was sleeping! What? WHAT. Kame narrowed his eyes. Ooooooh. Taguchi didn’t want him taking space on his bed or shedding cat hair on his linen. This was Taguchi’s underhanded way of getting him out of his precious personal space.

Well, too bad.

Hissing, Kame used his tail to toss off the blanket. Then, with his long, curled claws - never had he been more grateful to have them - he slashed and cut into the inner lining of the cat basket. He didn’t stop until the velvet was torn to shreds and feathers were raining down around him.

Kame jumped out and gave the basket one last swipe, satisfied when it tipped over on its side. With a sniff, he leapt onto Taguchi’s mattress, eyes already set in a fierce glare directed at the giant lump underneath the blankets. The big doofus was just going to have to deal with him.

Kame walked atop Taguchi’s still form and the dummy didn’t even stir. He was a heavy sleeper, something Kame and the others had discovered years before on the set of Pop Jam. Kame reached the edge of the blanket where it stopped just over Taguchi’s nose. Kame resisted swatting at him and instead hopped over next to him.

Tilting his head, Kame examined the curves and lines of Taguchi’s face, handsome and peaceful in sleep. He ducked underneath the covers and moved around until just his face peeked out. He cuddled into Taguchi so his fur just barely grazed his cheek, making sure to be right up in his bandmate’s personal bubble.

Taguchi wanted Kame out of the way? Kame would just cling on stubbornly.

With a sense of rightness restored, his dreams easily claimed him once more as Taguchi’s breath fanned over him in deep, lulling motions.

-

Fingers stroked him from his forehead to the back of his neck, and Kame mewled groggily in response. A large sigh. “You could’ve just told me you didn’t like it,” Taguchi said, resigned.

Kame smiled in his sleep.
