With his tail lazily swishing back and forth, Kame watched Taguchi putter around the kitchen from his perch on the countertop. His bandmate was in the middle of making a very simple breakfast of eggs and sausage, and Kame’s inner chef wanted to moan at the lack of creativity. If he had hands, they would be pushing Taguchi away from the stove.
A little ditty started to play, sounding like something from a video game, and Kame snorted when Taguchi picked up his cell phone. Of course that would be his ringtone.
“Hey, what’s up?” Taguchi asked, using his shoulder to keep the phone in place so both of his hands were free. “Umm, well…” He glanced at Kame, then the frying pan. “Actually, I got caught up with some stuff.”
Kame stopped paying attention when Taguchi placed a plate in front of him, having scrambled the eggs and cut up the sausage into tiny pieces. Despite being so plain, this was much better than his first meal when Taguchi had left him to fend for himself, confronted with long, smelly tentacles that, while delicious, were a pain to chew.
Kame nibbled at the sausage and unconsciously leaned into the touch that ran down his back.
“Some friends are coming over tonight,” Taguchi said.
Kame paused and looked up at him. Are you kidding me?
Taguchi winced and Kame took that to mean his glare worked even in cat form. “I can’t cancel, I’m sorry,” he said. “We had this gaming night planned for weeks. You can stay in my room while they’re here.”
Then Taguchi turned around to make his own plate, but Kame knew it was just an excuse to look away from his Glare.
Coward.

“They’ll be here any minute. Kame, are you sure you want to stay out here?”
Kame didn’t move his gaze away from the window, where he looked down at the lamp-lit streets. Not very many people had walked by and Kame thought Taguchi lucky for choosing such a quiet neighborhood to get an apartment in.
Taguchi’s reflection moved toward him, but then the doorbell rang which was quickly followed by a few loud knocks.
“Ta~guchi~”
Taguchi’s friends were noisy. Kame could already tell how this evening was going to go. His bandmate walked over to him and scratched his ears. “I’m sorry, okay?” Then he hurried and disappeared around the corner to the hallway.
Kame shared a look with Begonosuke, whose leaves swayed gently. Can you believe him?
“Why don’t you guys just give me the money now and save us the trouble of going through the usual bet,” said a familiar voice.
That can’t be… Someone who was very much not a stranger appeared in the reflection of the window. Kame turned around.
Taguchi had gaming nights with Nino? Two others appeared behind the Arashi member, and while Kame didn’t recognize the tall, intimidating looking man with tattoos plastered all over his muscled arms, he would recognize the laughing smirk on the second man anywhere.
Yokoyama plopped down on the large couch and made himself at home just as Taguchi emerged from the kitchen with drinks and a tray filled with an assortment of snacks, large bowl of popcorn included.
Nino and the stranger, who Kame dubbed in his mind as Hercules, both clapped Taguchi on the shoulder in thanks. Kame narrowed his eyes. When Taguchi handed a soda over to Yokoyama, the Kanjani8 member’s hand lingered a little too long. The final straw came when Hercules slung his arm around Taguchi’s shoulder, laughing and spinning some kind of hilarious tale that captured his bandmate’s complete attention.
Kame leapt from the windowsill to the table to the carpeted floor, stalking towards his prey. No one had noticed him on his quiet perch and Taguchi had already forgotten about him.
Traitor.
Kame crept forward slowly, his belly low to the ground. The fools were still occupied with their conversation. Once at an acceptable distance, Kame held his breath - then pounced.
“Hmm?” Hercules looked down as Kame swatted at his jeans. “Who’s this?”
Your worst nightmare. Kame prepared to sink his claws into his flesh when Hercules squatted down to pet him. Kame ducked and backpedaled into Taguchi’s legs.
“Seems shy,” Nino commented as he looked over the back of the couch.
“I’m watching him,” Taguchi said smoothly, reciting the excuse he had come up with earlier. “For a friend.”
“Cute little thing, isn’t he,” Hercules said. He tried again to pet him, but Kame was ready this time and took a swipe, which Hercules barely evaded. “Whoa! Okay, I take that back.”
“Kam- Kazu!” Taguchi exclaimed, surprised. “I’m so sorry. I promise he’s not usually like this. He’s normally a charmer.”
Kame tucked himself next to Taguchi’s ankle and hissed up at the three intruders.
“Someone’s possessive,” Yokoyama said, amused. He studied Kame over the couch as well. “’Kazu’, huh? Lemme guess. Your friend is a Kamenashi fan.”
“Hey! What if his friend is a fan of mine?” Nino pointed out.
“Oooookay,” Yokoyama said in a clearly questioning tone. He continued on, cutting off Nino who was about to protest. “He’s totally attached to you.”
Kame didn’t know what he was talking about, even as he clung to Taguchi’s pants stubbornly.
Taguchi denied it as well.
“Oh, please. You love the attention,” Yokoyama replied, dismissing him. “You should’ve gotten a pet sooner.”
Hercules twisted the cap off his beer and took a swig. “Why not take that one?” he asked, gesturing to Kame. “Don’t worry, when the cops come, we’ll plead ignorance.” He looked at the two chilling on the couch. “Right?”
Nino snorted as he inserted a game disc into the PlayStation 3. “Speak for yourself.”
“Arrested for catnapping. Only you, Taguchi,” Yokoyama said. He tossed a popcorn up in the air and caught it in his mouth.
“What do you say, Kazu? You and me on the run?” Taguchi leaned down and scooped Kame into his hands. He looked Kame in the eyes. “I’ll take you away from here.”
In the space of one second to the next, Kame held his breath at the small hint of something in Taguchi’s gaze.
Yokoyama broke the moment. “And then you’ll suffer withdrawal from not being in the spotlight,” he said.
“Blah, blah, blah. I didn’t come here to talk about Taguchi’s devil cat,” Nino said. He stood up and pointed a controller at all of them. “I came here to whoop your asses. Let’s go already! Taguchi, we’re up first.” He tried to poke Taguchi on the shoulder, but before he could touch him, Kame hissed again.
Nino blinked and looked Taguchi in the eye. “Your cat has a problem.”
Kame pointedly ignored Taguchi’s puzzled gaze looking over him in favor of sneering at the three unwanted guests. “He’s just hungry or something,” Taguchi said. “You guys go ahead.”
It was only when Taguchi brought him to the hallway that Kame stopped glaring. “Kaz- Kame, what’s up with you?” he asked.
Kame stretched up so his tiny paws reached up towards Taguchi’s collarbone while his hind legs were still situated on his bandmate’s palms. Taguchi lifted him up higher and Kame was able to jump up and perch himself on Taguchi’s shoulder.
Taguchi sighed and petted Kame’s head. “Try and be good,” he said. He walked back into the room and the other three all raised their eyebrows at Kame hanging off his shoulder.
Yokoyama spoke up first. “… Is this gonna be like a thing now, or…?”
“I guess so.” Taguchi shrugged. “So I thought you guys were gonna go ahead and start.” He absentmindedly reached up and stroked Kame’s flank, now clearly aware of him, unlike earlier.
Kame cuddled into Taguchi’s neck and purred in satisfaction.
