“Special delivery!”
That was the only warning Kame got before he heard several barks and running feet coming towards him. Instinct took hold and he scrambled to reach the other side of the room where Begonosuke sat on the windowsill. He almost reached the stepladder Taguchi had gotten for him when he was overtaken from behind. He tumbled over his paws and curled in on himself as he was nudged from all sides.
Master! Master!
Blinking, Kame realized he actually understood the excited barks and yips and that he was not, in fact, going to be eaten any time soon. He peeked out from under his paws and immediately recognized first the longhaired, mixed black, white and tan coat, and then the curly dark brown one.
… Ran? Jelly?
The dachshund and toy poodle descended upon him, sniffing and licking, and he squirmed under them, particularly ticklish in this form.
Okay, okay! Stop it, you two! Let me breathe, Kame said, or rather, meowed. He didn’t quite understand how this animal language thing worked.
Ran and Jelly backed off to give him space to stand on his four legs, though they still crowded close. He gazed at the two of them with their tongues hanging out and tails wagging, clearly elated to see him.
This is weird, Kame said, mostly to himself. And you guys are so… big.
You’re so small! Jelly yipped at him, prodding his flank with her nose.
Kame jumped at the feeling of Jelly’s cold and wet nose. Hey!
Ran lay down in front of him. So, Master, you’re a cat now? How did that happen? she asked. It’s not your best look.
Thanks for that, Kame replied wryly, scratching his ear with his paw. Wishes? Magic? Though Taguchi said something about aliens.
Taguchi? Is that your Person?
Kame looked over to the hallway entrance to see Taguchi smiling at them. Kame huffed and looked away. He wasn’t going to forgive him any time soon for unleashing his surprise the way he did. Kame just about had a heart attack and in this kitten body, he was certain he’d die.
Ran tilted her head to the side. Your Person is very tall, she continued. And awkward.
Her words registered. My what?
Ran touched her nose to his and Kame sneezed. That tickled! Your Person, the one who takes care of you. She said it in such a way that she obviously expected him to know that already. He didn’t know how he could tell what her tone was through just a series of yips, but he was a cat now, so he wasn’t going to question it.
Jelly bounded around him with her tail wagging. The one you’ll love forever and ever and ever! Like how you’re our Person! she exclaimed with an excited bark. Well, when you are a person. She sniffed him yet again. Though you still smell the same.
Kame shook his head at Jelly’s explanation. He’s not my Person, he said.
Why are you lying? Ran asked, puzzled.
He’s just taking care of me -
Right! Jelly said, nodding.
For now, Kame insisted.
Jelly put her face close to his, like his eyes mesmerized her. He seems fun! He laughs a lot, she said eagerly, proud to supply him with this information.
Kame sighed. Wasn’t Taguchi supposed to be bad with dogs? Why were his suddenly all for him? Jelly chose that moment to lick him from chin to forehead, prompting a smile.
I’ve missed you two, he said, bumping his head first against Jelly’s, then Ran’s.
Jelly barked happily. Wanna play, Master? Wanna play?
Before he could overthink it, Kame nudged them with his nose. Tag, you’re it!
Kame took off like a shot and his dogs were in quick pursuit, yapping. This was easily one of the most bizarre situations he had ever been in - actually turning into a cat excluded from the list - but there was also a kind of adrenaline that couldn’t be beat. Plus, it was ridiculously fun.
Kame ran in between and around Taguchi’s legs in a figure eight, bringing the chaos his way as Ran and Jelly took the opportunity to launch themselves at his bandmate. Taguchi squatted down to scratch and pet them on their heads, behind their ears, signature laugh erupting from his chest.
Trying to catch his breath, Kame watched from a small distance away. He shook his head at his dogs being so easily distracted from the game. He watched Junno giggle and accept their doggy kisses with glee.
My Person, huh?
That didn’t sound so bad.
