Last-Minute Longfic Recs

Oct 28, 2012 14:56

Some people on Twitter have been asking for recs to longfic that they can download before potentially losing Internet connection to the hurricane. And I am so not on top of that, but here is a miscellaneous collection of stories I've bookmarked that are long, good, and available for download into ebook formats.

Harry Potter
If you've read Harry Potter but haven't been in the fandom, this would be a perfect time to read one of my favorite fanworks of all time, The Shoebox Project. Marauders-era fic full of feelings and pining and humor and continuity errors and beautiful art that has set my mental images of all the characters. And now available in ebook formats, with art embedded!

ST:XI
Draws by syredronning is a wonderful massive (379k words and counting) fic with lots of kink and a realistic and complicated poly relationship. The first couple of stories in the series are dub-con, but from there the author builds consensual and believable relationships for the characters. While technically a WIP, each story in the series has its own plot arc and I don't see how you could be disappointed with over 300k words of fic, okay? (Kirk/McCoy, Kirk/McCoy/Pike, Pike/OFC).

Parallel Motion by thalialunacy. Ok, this is actually Trek RPF about werewolves in Hollywood and mpreg and stuff. So if you like that you should read it! 23k.

The Wind and Its Satellite by severinne. I WILL REC YOU ALL THE KIRK/PIKE/MCCOY WIPS GUYS. Seriously, why does that describe all of my most favorite fics in this fandom? 75k series with a lot worth reading even though it's a WIP.

Inception
Wartime 'verse by Tabi. All of Tabi's fics are set in the same universe, but the stories in this series are completely self-contained. The writing improves chronologically, so if you're impatient, I would start with Glitch, which has wonderfully creative use of dreamshare. There's a thread of magical realism that flows through the whole series and pays off magnificently in the last story. This is definitely not a WIP: Autumn Road takes us as far in the future as we can go in this 'verse, and I recommend reading it even if you're normally averse to character death. 340k, Arthur/Eames.

Synergy by AirgiodSLV. Crossover with Criminal Minds. If you can't read fic that doesn't have your OTP, skip this, but you're missing out. You don't need to have ever seen Criminal Minds for this story to make sense, though it helps. 40k.

Parlor Tricks and The French Drop by CyanideBreathmint. There's a third in this series, but it's a WIP. Awesome plotty action gen (with A/E overtones). 50k.

Patience, A Steady Hand by Helenish. The one where they're Vikings. 43k.

Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock, all that noise
Yes Yes Yes series by Basingstoke. BBC Sherlock. Porny, obscene, funny, awesome. 55k.

The Art of Seduction by flawedamethyst. Ridiculous Sherlock AU where Sherlock runs a blog called "The Science of Seduction." Pining. So much pining. 82k.

A Cure For Boredom by emmagrant. "I plan out the plot points and try to convey as many of them as possible with sex scenes." - EmmaGrant at Lubricus. This story is the platonic ideal of that approach. Think no one can write 81k of mostly sex scenes in which the main pairing doesn't get together until the end and it is generally hot and amazing? Think again.

Avengers/MCU
Disclosures by gqgqqt. Do you like amnesia and torture? How do you feel about hand mutilation? I'm being so unfairly flippant and this is a wonderful dark fic. Clint/Phil, 67k.

Masters of the Universe by NezumiPi. Wonderful dark gen AU, X-Men and Avengers, in which Erik Lensherr is a 12 year old. Kidfic without the cotton candy. 40k.

In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) by scifigrl47. It took me a little while to get used to Tony's voice in this, but damn. Madcap, plotty, moments both of whimsy and of darkness, and stories that involve the whole team as protagonists. Also Tony Stark's intelligent self-replicating roomba army. Yeah. Steve/Tony and Clint/Phil, 190k.

Ok, this process is making me realize that I have so many untagged bookmarks and several amazing fics that I never commented on because they were too good and I had to make up a worthy comment and I never did so they are still untagged and marked "to read" because I am not allowed to tag a bookmark until I comment on the fic. I'm sorry, authors, you blew my mind too hard.
