There was such a sad sweetness to this. You did a good job setting up the mother bear's death at the beginning, so it was hanging over the story, waiting for it to happen.

I read that article, and given that the bear had two cubs, I think it's easy to guess that she felt the woman and her dog were a threat to her babies. You did a good job highlighting the other side of that story.

This POV is so sad. Bears react on instinct - so it's not like she was every just out to get the woman, of course she was protecting something. I hate that as humans we're so sure of our place that we don't take the time to understand and just remove 'problems'.
