I accepted the job and I start on Monday. I went out to Charlestown MGH today to watch a subject get scanned, but it was cancelled because the subject's car broke down. Oh well...at least I know where it is now. Not much else new around here. We have a new housemate who is an artist from the MIT MediaLab. She seems fun and interesting and has ( Read more... )

Oh man, I wanna meet a girl who is an artist from the MIT Media Lab and has a pet rat. MIT Media Lab is the shit! I was just reading an article the other day about a guy at MIT Media Lab who made a 1 bit "groovebox." It generates a simple square wave with 0 being a signal at say -1 and 1 a signal at 1. Then there are lots of effects you can apply to this square wave and you can create 2 to the some power different pitches. Pretty amazing that this guy is getting a living stipend to do this stuff. The Lab is on my "I'd quit grad school for that..." list along with working for Google, becoming an award winning novelist, starting my own non-profit, and running for President.

Ask her in a couple of weeks if she knows Benjamin Mako Hill. He's a big Linux/Debian guy who went to Hampshire and is apparently headed to the MIT Media Lab now. I read his blog and secretly plot to one day be his friend.

...oh and glad to hear you're doin well. :-)

Wow I'm so happy you accepted that job. It sounds a bit far from home, though; I hope it doesn't become a drag commuting (well, of course it will). I am sorry, though, that you won't be coming back out to Oz anytime soon because of the job. Don't worry about being inadequate to the task, you'll get the hang of it in a few months.
