So the car, she is dead. Again. Engine dead. Again. Grr. And I was so sure after a whole-engine replacement that we wouldn't need to spend any more large sums on that car for a year or so. Turns out, not so much

There is something very questionable about this. If the mechanic is putting in bad parts, it's his responsibility to replace them at no charge. I would ask a few mechanics if this is SOP, because it doesn't seem right.
Not really the mechanics fault if he put in a bad engine... plus he's in ellensburg. :( Could you give me the name of your car place again? Considering having the engine yanked, and then using the refund as a down payment on a different car all together.
Obviously, the mechanic cannot be held liable for the bad part. However, the manufacturer/supplier can. It would make sense that they would cover the labor in the event of an in-warranty failure. If they do, but the mechanic is charging you anyway, he's getting paid twice. That's what I mean by 'questionable.' I mean, what's to keep a mechanic from putting in bad parts all the time just to keep getting the labor fee?
God bless you. Perfection tire was going to charge us $800 to take the engine out, Martin said he could do it for $350. Well worth getting the tow, even if I have to end up paying for the "diagnostic" of the first place. Which consisted of them turning on the engine and saying 'yup, that noise ain't good'.
...how exactly does a brand new engine just fail? I know your car has seen quite a lot of use, but it shouldn't be so bad that it corrupts all that touches it. Sounds pretty iffy to me.
