Interview #2 reminds me of a humor essay I read a long time ago. The author said that men make car-related excuses as to why they're late, and women make child-related excuses. The men are believed and excused; the women aren't. Somehow it's less OK to mention kid problems than car problems, even though both men and women are likely to have both kinds of problems. She advised her friends to mention something that went wrong with the car next time they're late for work, regardless of the reason.
