Pissed Off Bird

Summary: My cockatiel had a wing cyst that was removed this weekend. It was an ingrown feather that swelled up. I feel badly because I didn't have it removed sooner. To make a long story short, I didn't know it was there because it was covered up by the other feathers and I just thought his foot was injured on that side (don't ask) and I thought ( Read more... )

I feel your pain.. similar thing happened to my cat, except is was empacted and infected anal glands. He had been kind of off for several weeks, and we only realized what it was when we found blood in his stool. We're having to shove anti-biotics down him as well.

Basically what we are doing is trying to praise him as much as we can when he's being mugged down.. and then when he runs off all angry, we leave him alone for a bit until he can settle down. Then I try to pet him gently and just love on him. I try to make sure I interact with him throughout the day so he can realize that picking up does not always mean yucky meds. He's a squirmy little bugger too!

I'm trying that route with my bird at the moment. Gave him the meds (took almost 10 minutes to get him out tonight), put him back in the cage and waited awhile, then took him back out (10 more minutes of coaxing him out) and just gave him a lot of attention. Put him back, wait awhile, and took him back out and gave him more attention. I can't wait until this is over. I hate giving pets meds.

Yeah, it's a shame they can't understand it's to make them better.

Oh and of course I'm sure you know.. the better they feel, the more of a fight they put up.

I have one more day of giving him the meds. He's been very unhappy about it and he makes sure to let me know.

I have noticed that since the cyst was removed, he has improved. He now preens that side of his wing, he uses the playpen again, and when I am able to convince him it isn't medication time, he's not as agitated and a lot calmer.

Playing as they once did is always a good sign that they're healing nicely.

Hopefully, once the meds are through, he won't be agitated and think you're giving him medicine.
