Kess, this place sounds awesome! Or am I just saying that because it has Russian Orthodox cathedrals? No, I'm pretty sure I mean it. =;) For some reason, I thought of Harbin as a place like Shenyang with the Soviet-style concrete apartment blocks everywhere, but this is a neat surprise.

Also, jesus, -30 Celsius? That's far colder than I ever had in St. Pete. Though St. Pete was having really unusual and disappointing weather when I was there.

Shenyang is the place with the Soviet-style concrete apartments.
Harbin is a Russian-themed city. The Chinese are enamored with the idea that Russians lived there once, and so now they build all the apartments with a Russian flavor. It's all tacky bright yellow and bright green facades with onion domes and silly baroque detailing. And of course, because this is China, there was one facade that was bright red with gold trim.
Well, more on Harbin tomorrow or whenever I get the chance.

Correctly in Russian is not "Китайский Петерь", and "Китайский Питер"!
