Everywhere we go, we leave something behind. An empty packet, cigarette butts, footprints...  Humans it seems, are very messy animals ( Read more... )

I love the story about the glasses! How fun and a little sad...

Good luck on the bean trellis. I just had one taking down by raccoons. Yay, critters.

No luck on the chard. The seeds never even germinated...

Bloody animals eh? The wind seems to take great joy in toppling mine over but I expect the raccoons to discover it anyday now. I'm going to camp out with a paintball gun if that happens.

Try germinating your Chard indoors. If the soil is too warm it won't start and will go into hibernation till it gets cooler. Same thing goes for lettuce, cabbage, and most everything else in the Brassicaceae family.

I'm worried about our stuff this summer, Something got into some of our plants (the lemon tree included) and ravaged them. I don't know if it was kids or varmits - we have skunks, possums, and raccoons (one year we found a huge pile of soiled diapers in the corner of our garden. The next year, it was about 100 avocaco pits... finally figured out it was skunks). We have a HUGE old gnarly cedar tree and it's well inhabited.

I will do that with the chard when we get home. I suspected it might be the heat, even though it was planted in a fairly shady spot, the ground is really warming up now. Perhaps starting it in late August/early Septmeber is the key. I know I've had lettuce growing pretty much year round, so I suspect you are right.

Thanks!
