Help, my friends that take great photographs

I would like to get a new camera. But I don't know what to get. I would like something that will take good picts. I am not looking for the top of the line. Just something better that the cannon elph and its 2 mpixels. Cause it really sucks for quilts and other things. Any suggestions would be great.
