Fewer gun crimes, sure. That's like saying there's less car accidents in places where there are fewer cars. Less crime in general? My guess would be it's probably about the same. Asshats will be asshats, no matter where they are or what weapon options are available for them to assault their victims. Being of the non-looting, non-rioting, generally peace loving, leave me alone and I leave you alone type personality, however, I like knowing that if my polar opposite ever comes to visit I can make it quite clear that they are not welcome.
In general we're about six or seven times less likely to be murdered, IIRC.
Reassuringly we seem to be getting to the point of it being socially acceptable to kill home invaders with knives, I'm in favour of sending in armed police/military to deal with civil unrest, and there are some people I'd trust with firearms -- myself included, funnily enough. Having them in general circulation does mean a lot more people get shot, though, if the US is anything to go by.

Far less gun crime than the US, which is no great surprise.
