This isn't the first foray into commercials that Stephin Merritt has ventured into. There was a fabric softener jingle a few years back that was the instrumental version of "I Think I Need A New Heart" looped over a family hanging laundry.

I was okay with the fabric softener and dog food commercials with "I Think I Need A New Heart." They probably just purchased the song from the label.

This piece seems rather blatantly commissioned though.

Yes. I've now heard Magnetic Fields song in about three commercials. "I Think I Need A New Heart" has been in I think three, last I counted.
