Madarame Ikkaku at
yourmomsbaldOffensive Coordinator, Karakura University Football Team.
History: Violent, aggressive, egotistical. Madarame Ikakku was born to a poor family in the city of New York. With no support from his parents, he soon realized that if he was going to get anywhere in this world, he had to do it on his own. He took whatever he wanted, barely passing his middle-school classes, spending most of the nights on the streets.
Ikkaku was all about respect, and soon took a liking to violence. He was good at it - and, he believed that there was no man that could beat him in a fair fight. And, any unfortunate soul that would ridicule him - especially about his bald head - would quickly be introduced to his fist.
Ikkaku would fight anyone over anything. He got in numerous fights, with countless people, and in ninth grade, he had a chance encounter with three students. Making quick work of them, Ikkaku soon realized that he had just hospitalized three starting players for a local Private School’s football team. Expecting death threats, to his surprise, he was offered a full athletic scholarship.
He took a liking to football, although he detested the upper-class social scene of the school. He rebelled, and only made one true friend - Ayasegawa Yumichika. He never understood why. Maybe it was ‘cause for being such a fruit, he sure could fight.
Universities fought over his football skills. He was feared as one of the most aggressive offensive linemen. He played professionally, until eventually his violence got out of hand. Critics said he “went too far,” when during a game, Ikkaku tackled an opponent so violently, the poor soul is lucky to still be walking.
Suspended, fined most of his earnings, Ikkaku need a job - and fast. With his good buddy Yumichika working at a University, Ikka’ thought he’d tag along, and coach a few newbies while he was at it.
Back to Top Mashiro at
googlygogglesSophomore, majoring in Fashion Design and Marketing
History: Mashiro has never been average, even though she was born to average parents in your less than average big city. Her childhood was full of average things; birthday parties with clowns and public school and time on the playground. The difference was in the girl herself. She commanded attention with her ready charm, adorable face and remarkable voice; and when the attention wasn’t hers, the charm changed to needle sharp snark. Her parents doted on her as much as they were able to, but with their average salaries, it wasn’t enough to keep the princess satisfied.
At the age of 15, Mashiro was stopped by a man while in the mall with friends. His attention was caught by her violently dyed hair (which was done in a fit of petulance based on her father’s suggestion that she tone her personality down a notch) and peaked even more when he heard her speak. He was looking for someone with a certain quality and look to fit in with a project he was gearing up for.
The media had grown tired of boy bands and the like, so he was getting together a small girl group that he was planning on using to bring back the popularity that had waned. She was thrilled that someone had finally seen what she was worth.
That very night, she told her parents that, if they really loved her, they would not only allow her to do this, but they would help her in every way they could. Wanting to see her happy, they agreed and a star was born.
The band grew in fame, with numerous number one hits and several platinum records, but the girls were all princesses and never got along well. It was never obvious, though, on stage. Not until one of them decided that she deserved more of the spotlight than the others got. After all, she had the best voice and was the prettiest.
Mashiro thought differently.
At the age of 18, her star sputtered out amid pictures of her shoving the problematic girl during a performance; and audio of her telling the media just how the other girls spent their off time. The band was soon forgotten in lieu of bigger, better, and newer acts.
Her bank account was still secure, thanks to a good accountant, but she needed something to do with her life now that her dreams of stardom were over. Her fashion sense had always been lauded, so she decided she would study fashion and fashion marketing at Karakura University. As far as she was concerned, her star would rise again.
Back to Top Matsumoto Rangiku at
boobs_or_bustLaw Professor
History: Rangiku was born into a stereotypical middle-class family. Her father was an accountant, her mother a homemaker, and young Rangiku was the couple’s only child, their pride and joy. She was raised in their suburban home-2 story, 3 bed, 3.5 bath-surrounded by analogous families lined in neat rows, all with 2.4 kids and a dog.
It was painfully boring.
Ever the early bloomer, Rangiku fell into the wrong crowd by the time she was thirteen, skipping school to shoplift and drink-her favorite: gin-her good looks and epic cleavage enmeshing her in a circle of much older, much more dangerous friends, while her parents sat in front of their marble fireplace, oblivious. She discovered sex by fifteen, tipsy at a party and all too willing to fall for a few kind words and suggestive touches. By the age of sixteen, she had landed her drunk self in jail for the night, her horrified parents writing a check for her bail in shaky handwriting, no longer perfect.
But not even the appalled stares of her parents could set her on a better track, and Rangiku found herself falling back into old habits, honing her sexuality and learning to hold even more liquor. It wasn’t until she befriended a woman-girl, more like, for all her desperate attempts at maturity-with shining silver hair and immense turquoise eyes that her life turned around. She was almost exactly like Rangiku in every way, all tenacity and precociousness, only a few years younger and much more unfortunate. She was pregnant. At fifteen. With a boy, she later heard, but by then the woman-now a woman, with pain in those icy eyes-had long disappeared, without telling a soul where she had gone.
And Rangiku was left to wonder. To wonder if her friend would ever be the same. To wonder whether she would turn out similarly. To wonder how on earth she could fix things now.
But fix them she did, putting her brains to use instead of her breasts (okay, so she still did use them a little) and focusing on studying law. Despite its famously boring nature, Rangiku actually enjoyed it in spite of her generally carefree and easygoing spirit.
After all, you have to know the rules before you can break them.
And to top it off, she looked great in heels.
Putting herself through four years of college and three more of law school, she emerged with a degree in English and a Juris Doctor, passing the bar exam (barely, but who’s counting?) to become an Attorney at Law. She decided to become a professor at Karakura University, teaching an introductory course without the boredom. Though whether it was because of her skills or assets, she couldn’t tell.
She had learned her lessons the hard way, and now her students would learn them the easy way. Relatively speaking. She was anything but a pushover, after all.
Back to Top Mizore Rukia at
likechappiesSenior, majoring in Art History
History: Rukia's early childhood memories are hazy at best, incomprehensible at worse. Flowers, laughter, thin blankets, warm arms; the stuff of television commercials and Hallmark cards. All this abruptly stopped, however, when Rukia turned four. The blankets were still thin, but the flowers, laughter, and arms had disappeared. Instead, Rukia was alone, a denizen of state care and more or less alone in the world.
For the subsequent five years, Rukia was pushed in and out of foster homes. She was too old for most families to consider adoption and, due to poor nutrition, she was far too small and pale to be the attractive, bouncy child the bourgeois were looking for. Life in foster care had taught her to be bossy, tough, and outspoken; she did what she wanted when she wanted and punishments were usually few in crowded homes.
It was during this phase, when she was roughly nine years old, that she met Renji Abarai. It was her third time running away and who knew which time it was for him. She rescued him from an angry shopkeep, he rescued her from boredom. They began a volatile but completely loyal friendship, sharing leadership amongst a group of rag-tag tattermalions. But the good times wouldn't last forever.
When she was eleven, she was adopted. The Mizores were unable to have a child of their own and hesitant to go through the trouble of raising a baby with no experience. They met Rukia; they saw the "beauty within" and accepted Rukia into their home, baggage and all. Rukia slowly mellowed, humbled by comfortable living and the sudden approach of a future. Renji had all but disappeared from her life; while she had calmed, Renji had gotten himself sent to Juvenile Detention. When he returned, things had changed, albeit marginally. She became his conscience.
College came quickly and Rukia was floundered. Her grades had been mediocre at best and the only thing she had shown any true interest in was art (interest - not proficiency). After a lengthy discussion with her parents and school counselor, it was decided that she would major in Art History. And thus far, she has..excelled. To an extent. Her future is still hazy.
Back to Top Sado Yasutora at
chasingchadSophomore, majoring in Music
History: Ever since he had been able to remember, people would glance and stare at the exotic creature Sado Yasutora knew he was. Holding hands with his parents on a stroll through the park made him feel as if he was being scrutinized by strangers who noticed his father was Japanese and his mother Mexican. Biracial children were never looked upon as marvels in either culture.
So he fought. With those massive, strong fists of his he broke those that insulted him. And when his parents were killed by those people, Yasutora’s first struck with destructive force.
Of course that had led to trouble, and trouble lead to dangerous, reckless violence. Had his grandfather not stepped in that day, he would have been maimed or dead.
That’s when he learned the right way to use his massive, strong fists. He started to use them for his grandfather-he used them to scare off the birds from the crops, to till the earth so the seeds would grow, and to make his grandfather proud. Yet, once in a while, they still lashed out in anger.
It was the dusty, parched acoustic guitar partially hidden beneath the pantry that had finally tamed his fists.
In exchange for not using his fists as tools of destruction, his grandfather turned them into tools of art.
Eventually, as the old man’s purpose faded, so did his life. Having taught Yasutora all the morals and customs he had learned, he passed on. His final gesture was on of encouragement, watery eyes beamed with pride as his grandson cried on his shoulder. That night, thanking him with notes rather than words, Yasutora swore over his grandfather’s coin pendant know dangling from his neck that his hands would never again be used as weapons.
Guitar strapped across his back, coach class tickets clutched in his fingers, Yasutora boarded Gate 37 towards the USA, and towards his new life.
Back to Top Shihouin Yoruichi at
shunkoCriminal Justice Professor
History: Yoruichi, a New Year's kid, has lived every day of her life without regrets. Her father and mother are long since deceased and she grew up in an orphanage, which she promptly ran away from a the age of 13 and did the best she could on her own. She has stolen many things, been involved in a lot of running (mostly away from things/people) and probably that's why she's good at her area of concentration.
When she was 17 she started working at Karakura as whatever they'd take her as, be it janitorial work or otherwise. The previous Professor of Criminal Justice took a shine to her and arranged for a scholarship, based on her merit/ passing a few choice exams. Passing with natural ease, Yoruichi studied criminal justice and double-majored in education, landing her the successor's role when her own professor moved on to teach abroad in Japan. Young to be a professor on her own, she has been the target of jibes and skepticism, but she frankly doesn't care. It's her job to teach and teach well and as far as she's concerned, any one who is a student of hers better be ready to learn to the same extent.....
Yoruichi has been known to use force but many of the more unbelievable rumors (such as putting students through physical training while having lessons when they weren't being 'good little students') are continually whispered about, though no one has the guts to approach her about it, of course.
Back to Top Soi Fong at
collegiatedroneSenior, majoring in Political Science
History: Established as she and her family were in the New England upper middle class, Soi Fong never led what one would call a privileged lifestyle. Though she was never deprived a necessity, the Fong household was notoriously strict. Soi Fong's parents, Chinese immigrants, built their modest wealth from scratch with their amazing work ethic and higher educations. Though they had attained a comfortable home with all the modern appliances that came with it, they did not allow themselves to relax. They expected their six children to live in the same way: with constant vigilance, smart spending, a love of learning, and a powerful desire to overcome all obstacles and rivals.
While other children frolicked and played outside, Soi Fong stayed indoors memorising her times tables. While other preteens sang into hairbrushes and danced in their ruffled panties, Soi Fong was learning the complexities of the Clinton administration. Such behaviour extended into her teenage years. She attained valedictorian status, won state championships in tennis, and had many of her essays published in esoteric academic journals. Of course, she had no friends and had a minor collapse during her senior year, but she gained entry into Karakura University on a full-ride scholarship. At her parent's behest, she decided to major in Political Science with a minor in Economics.
Back to Top Tsumugiya Ururu at
schwarzseeleSophomore, majoring in Microbiology
History: Ururu was a good girl - she was smart and motivated, always got good grades, and was a favorite among all her teachers. But that's where the problems started. As desperately as she tried to make friends, she was always shunned due to her always being the favorite. As high school came about, Ururu grew distant and shy towards her peers and most importantly her studies; however, the bullying and ridicule stopped.
Affected by the pain of barely passing high school (although she was more than capable of doing the work) and lack of friends, Ururu had to change her life - and fast. However, more turmoil came in the form of her middle-class parents telling her they couldn't afford university tuition, and their uncertainty of her doing well (due to the fact of her barely passing high school).
Off to community college it was, where Ururu asorbed herself in her studies, determined to prove to world what she was capable of. During this time, Ururu wasn't sure what she wanted to do or what exactly motivated her until she came across a biology scientific journal. Within the journal was an article written by a man named Urahara Kisuke about nanotechnology. It was this article that struck inspiration and determination, and all the more when she found out he worked at Karakura University.
During spring semester, Ururu made a couple honor societies, surpassing everyone's expectations, and receieved a scholarship to Karakura University for her sophmore year.
Back to Top Urahara Kisuke at
by_scienceProfessor of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Forensic Science
History: Deemed a genius, Kisuke Urahara often defied everything he was supposed to be and still managed to do what was expected of him and much more.
Science then, became no exception. Mischievous and jovial, Kisuke tore through science curriculum after science curriculum, all classes proving too easy for the tow-headed boy. Tired with the lack of challenges his advanced science courses offered, Kisuke began inventing in his dark, dank basement, turning the all-too-easy knowledge into productivity. Everyday products became more efficient, more useful in his ever-molding hands.
Although college courses were simple, Kisuke often disregarded them as second priorities; inventing, his true passion, took most of his time. Science Bachelor’s and Major’s were barely achieved, not because he was incapable, but because he didn’t care; after all, Kisuke hated the formality and rigidity of college life, and he would rather fix that pesky prototype than study for a Microbiology final.
Disappointed with what College had to offer, Urahara left, both because he was kicked out and out of free will. He decided to apply as a teacher in Karakura University an easy side job and funding for his expensive, but worthy passion. Also an old friend of his was teaching at the University but, of course, that was just an added bonus.
With what little money he had in his banking account, Urahara bought a run-down office space near the University and turned it into his house and his workshop, selling technological oddities and offering to fix anything for a low price.
Back to Top Yamada Hanatarou at
clumsyncluelessFreshman, majoring in Education
History: Eighteen years ago, in a small estate just off the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a frail young woman gave birth to her second child in the comfort of her home. The infant was small, thin, and pale, but overall the family saw the birth as a success-in a line riddled with genetic disorders and weak constitutions, a son seemingly born without any major maladies was a blessing. Thus, Yamada Hanatarou’s life began optimistically-for the first few years of his life, he was showered with gifts, praise, and adoration, and in return, the little boy always had a bright smile to offer to those around him.
However, on his sixth birthday, everything began to fall apart. After a particularly tough tumble with some of the boys down the street, Hanatarou found himself spotted with dark bruises all over his body-injuries that failed to heal even after a few months had passed. Fraught with concern, his mother had rushed Hanatarou to the local physician, who was unable to determine the root of the problem. As the days passed, the small boy grew increasingly weak, and at his lowest point was even bedridden, unable to feed or dress himself. It was only after Hanatarou’s mother pulled some strings to get one of Karakura’s finest doctors to examine the poor child that the problem was accurately identified.
Hanatarou was born with Type I Gaucher disease.
Concerned about his health and wellbeing, Hanatarou’s parents began sheltering the young boy, forbidding him from playing with his peers or even attending public school. As a result, Hanatarou began to close himself off from the world, believing that his genetic disease made him different, a freak even, skin paler than ivory with unusually dark rings around his eyes. Although doctors suggested that the boy get more fresh air, Hanatarou stubbornly resisted, only stepping outdoors under the cover of a large straw hat, one which would cover his abnormal appearance.
It was on one of these occasions that Hanatarou happened across a young girl in the neighborhood, Kotetsu Isane. Tall, cheery, and healthy, Isane was the exact opposite of Hanatarou both physically and mentally, and upon seeing the small boy cowering among the bushes, Isane took the initiative to introduce herself to him, offering her hand in friendship. Although initially reluctant, Hanatarou slowly began opening up to his elder peer, and over many years a strong friendship flourished between them, until Isane had to leave home in search of higher education at Karakura University.
Having lost his one close friend, Hanatarou’s health began to deteriorate even further, sending him into bouts of depression and dizzy spells. For two years, the cycle continued, until one day the young man received a letter in the mail from Karakura’s admission office, reminding all prospective freshmen of the approaching admissions deadline. Although Hanatarou saw no hope of actually applying, he kept the letter on his nightstand day and night. One of his doctors-the same one who had initially diagnosed him with Gaucher’s-noticed this behavior and offered Hanatarou a proposition: if Hanatarou could improve his health and prove himself able to assimilate into society, the doctor would allow him to apply for admissions at KU. With a new goal in front of him, Hanatarou began exercising and studying, and by the time the winter rolled around, he was ready to apply for transfer as a second semester freshman. While still unsure what options were open for a man as frail as he, Hanatarou’s will has grown much stronger over the past few months, and he now sees himself as ready to tackle life with a smile.
Back to Top Zaraki Kenpachi at
coach_zarakiFootball Coach and Gym Trainer
History: From the time he was very small (well very young, he was never small) Ken's favorite passtime was beating people up. For years he was the terror of his elementary school and his parents were at a loss with how to find a more... constructive outlet for his aggression. In fifth-grade the answer struck them. Football.
Young Kenpachi took to the sport immediately, and excelled above his peers until high school. Finally in high school, other guys were finally able to match his size. Determined to keep his title as the best, Ken trained relentlessly which actually cost him his grades during sophomore year (This was, fortunately for him, before the no pass, no play rules). Nonetheless, Kenpachi graduated at age 19 and was snatched up by the University of Iowa almost immediately.
Ken's college team was named the NCAA champions his junior year and they were barely defeated the next. With a major in Kinesiology, and a high place in the NFL draft, Ken ended up playing for the Seattle Seahawks.
Ken met his wife Tasha, a publicist in Seattle almost immediately after and after a few months of... well basically hot smecks she ended up pregnant so he married her. And thus, Yachiru came into the world...
Things went great for awhile, but after awhile Ken was 'bought' by another team, and the move was the first crack in the family's world. Ken's growing popularity lead him down the same paths many celebrities take, drinking and sleeping around and the like. Finally, after eight years of marriage Tasha filed for divorce and won custody of Yachiru.
For the first time in his life, Kenpachi felt loss, needless to say he was attached the the little bugger and as his career and his vices started spiraling out of control he kicked himself back into gear, retiring from Pro-football and seeking a more respectable job. Karakura University had recently let its football coach go, and hired Kenpachi. Upon Reevaluation of Ken's living conditions, the courts granted joint-custody. Though Ken would never admit it to anyone's face, he loves his daughter more than he probably ever loved his ex-wife and some people might notice that he's considerably less mean, domineering and overall cranky during summers and school holidays...
