I remember as a kid seeing commercials for the film. More then a decade later I actuallly read the book by Roger Zelazney( the amber series). having seen no more then 30 seconds of the actual movie, from your decription of the movie I can tell they did a "little" bit of altering. The main character "Hell" Tanner wasent the most likeable of guys. Think grizzled biker with a SS dagger. Tanner was doing this because he as criminal and was pardoned to d cross the "alley" with a batch of medical supplies. Oh and they weren't trying to get through a 100 mile stretch of land , he was trying to get from the west coast to the east coast .Damnation Alley was basically the american Heartlands (3000 miles)filed with radiation storms and lot's o mutant critters. so it soundslike they kept the basic premise of the book. Alas Hollywood had it's way with the script like it always does. I'll probably try seeing the movie at some point just to see all the changes they did. I do however recommend the book.
