usability

I realized I forgot to post about the whole of the usability session, when it was one of the most interesting things of the whole internship (so far). :P

So the second part of the usability session was interviewing people about the layout and seeing what they think of it. So QC interviewed Cheng Sin and one of Gao Ming's friends, and I interviewed Jason, the second of Gao Ming's friends. I think I did pretty well, but I was quite nervous as to what too say and I ended up going really fast. First time, what can I say? :)

And I realized that our designs have a LOT of flaws. It's true, isn't it, how you're blindsided, not just on website design but also in other aspects of life. (I will NOT become philosophical now) I'm currently working on a new layout for my portfolio and I realized there's a HUGE flaw in the new layout, which is called affordance, with regards to the navigation. Affordance means subtle hints in design that convey the meaning of the element. I hope I put that across correctly O_O An example is that for a default link (Livejournalists! The links on the Post an Entry page are default), it's blue and underlined, which hints to you that it's a link. Yep that's affordance. And for buttons, affordances are making it beveled or embossed, or whatever. Yeah okay back to my portfolio. But if I make the affordance clear it won't look as nice as before. Oh well, usability before presentation I guess. I want to launch the new layout before the hols are up though, so I'll see what I can do.

That was long... Anyway the usability session was really enlightening and fun, and it kinda made me interested in becoming a usability expert x) 'Cause QC told us that to be a usability expert you have to be interested in how the human mind works and how people perceive things differently, and personally I find that really interesting :) Sooo. Another career choice I guess? Haha.

Random but I saw Shanxi and Stef while out on lunch break. :) Familiar faces! How not to see anyone when I'm working at ORCHARD haha.

For a laugh x)
