Steampunk Convention...and comments about Furry

Had a blast yesterday at a new Steampunk event in Daytona.  I put together a little outfit with some things that I already had...nothing elaborate, and certainly not anything expensive...created a character that was, for lack of a better idea, a dirigible attendant.  White shirt, black vest with my silver pocketwatch, khaki slacks, and black shoes ( Read more... )

Well... I don't think that most furries are unable to socialize - many may be but not most. The real issue is that they tend to not be noticable as furries when outside a furry event. And given the press we usually get... who can blame them?

Yamavu, Karpour and myself were at the vienna comic trade and Yamavu took Eddie McBadger for a walk. There were quite a few reactions along the lines of "OMG Furries! Run! Don't let them catch you". Mind you it was all in good fun but still...

I'm not making my "furryness" a complete and total secret, but I don't go around bragging either. If talk *should* come to it, I probably would talk about it - but so far it hasn't and therefore I didn't. I'm much more worried about any John Doe on the 'net finding out the connection between Atkelar and RL me - which is why I'm careful on the net.

Thanks for this. I'm headed to Anime Central in Chicago, the weekend after next. I'm part of an FPS clan that's been formed from other clans, so I find myself living the example of a furry to these people... whether I want to or not. I find myself having to explain the fandom over IM's and game lobbies and chat rooms, all the time. That's okay, though; I feel that this is where I need to be, helping people at that edge, looking over at us, understand where we're coming from. I'm attending ACEN as part of a Team Fortress 2 cosplay group.* At the afterparty, I plan on telling a lot of stories about things I've seen and done. I want to be available for questions and if anyone else from this clan goes to this next party, where they hear some dumb thing being said about furries, and pipes up with "Well they're not ALL like that...", then I'd consider my time well-spent.

This topic is pertinent enough to be made into a lecture at a con!

Yep I thought it was rather inspiring.

Come to FurFright this year, I am planning a program called D* ... they ruin everything. Its meant to a fun romp, with some discussion at solutions to help improve the fandom.

> Second thing that came up, it's been very noticed that there are people within the furry fandom, that like to put other furries down a LOT.

THIS! I see it all the time, and I find it terribly immature and sad - especially if they do it in public. How stupid do you have to be to hurt your own peer group?

About people going to room parties to get drunk: Well I guess a bit of that has to do with the fact that in most of the USA, you're not legally allowed to get drunk anywhere else - and not everyone can afford to get drunk on $6 bottles of Heineken at the hotel bar :)

I get what you're saying and there is truth in it, but I think someone needs to point out that the behaviors mentioned aren't automatically signs that someone is wrong, or immature, or cliquish ( ... )
