We were supposed to leave on Friday for a weekend visit with my dad, but the weather has been truly frightful so we hemmed and hawed until the last minute about going. Today was Raine's first day of preschool. We found a place that has a dance and gymnastics component, and given how much Raine loves dance, I feel like it will be a good fit--it is not my platonic ideal of preschool, but the thing about platonic ideals is that they are damned hard to find here on earth. Mica fell asleep on the walk home from CoHo, but his clothes were wet, so it took me a little while to get him settled on the bed. Raine has gotten very good at entertaining herself during these transitions, usually choosing to color or play in her room. I want to write a post gushing about my little boy on his first birthday. The changes in the first year are just amazing. A year ago he had a lot in common with a doll. Now he's cruising and signing, and stacking blocks. He weighed 26 pounds at his 12 month check-up, and didn't even flinch when getting his shot. He has opinions and desires ( Read more... )

Seriously, is there some kind of evolutionary advantage to getting sick at night? The last few times Raine has been sick it has been mostly or exclusively at night. Right now she's passed out on the living room floor, since she spent the hours from 10pm to 7am puking every half hour or so. When maxemulien took a spill on his bike this morning (don't worry, he's a little bruised but nothing too serious) instead of dragging two kids to urgent care with us, or calling for an ambulance to take maxemulien on his own, I called olstad and she took the kids while I drove maxemulien to the doctor.
