So, we are at the local 4th of July fireworks display, and there are balloons being handed out somewhere. We have arrived right at dark, and the fireworks are expected to go off shortly, but Penelope wants a balloon. Daddy says no, he doesn't see where they're giving them away, but Penelope really wants a balloon ( Read more... )

I wanted to spin fire for the 4th, but didn't get the chance. Instead, there was massage exchange, watching cute people in bathing suits dump tapioca on each other, and people getting temporary peacock piercings. (Feathers inserted into the skin.) Entertaining, even if I didn't get what I was looking for.

Where in the world were you, that all this was going on? It sounds like great fun, even sans fire. (Which I didn't know you had picked up, but doesn't surprise me in the least. Remind me to introduce you to Brad Rhodes some day, I would be interested in seeing the chemistry. From a safe distance, perhaps.)

It was the birthday party (+4th of July bbq) that Ms. Anomalisa Suicide threw for her boy.

It is interesting to think about the logic path a four year old had to travel to consider liberating a neglected balloon from someone else. Especially one who gets basically everything she really needs and most of what she wants. And, without having to resort to larceny.

I don't think that there is much logic to it. In her world, she is the center of the known universe. What I find interesting is the way that she tries to sell it to her unwilling accomplice!

I think it is less criminal and more pragmatic (though I wasn't thinking that last night). Kids don't have property, really, and we tell them all kinds of arbitrary things about property. We'll declare a stick on the road to be Johnny's or Billy's depending on who picked it up first, for example.

It is also frequently convenient to adults to reassign ownership of an item when the original owner is taking a nap or has been called home by his or her parents. I think this is what she was getting at when she asked for a balloon that someone wasn't paying attention to. She's probably been awarded things that weren't being paid attention to frequently at day care.

Wow, this is a boring reply. Oh well.

Strikes me as an interesting reply. You're basically arguing that are born economically communist/amerindian, and that we beat western property morality into them.
