I'm really happy with the 32-inch Samsung I got from Amazon using this improbable deal back in March. You'll hardly ever get a deal that good, but Amazon does have good offers quite often on the stuff I wanted anyway. That model isn't in stock at the moment, but this similar one is. Biggest difference seems to be two, instead of three, HDMI connections.

Also, Woot often sells HDTVs, sometimes refurbished, at decent prices and with $5 shipping, period. But, you have to wait to see what comes around. Depends how much of a rush you're in.

Best Buy has great sales, and will price match for most vendors. Sometimes they'll price-match Amazon, and sometimes they won't. Be willing to walk out if they won't match a price on an item you can get elsewhere, even online. Don't spend $100 on cables. If you spend more than $15-20, you're being bilked.

Thanks, Mark! I knew you would be able to help guide me.

What about setup of these things? I don't plan on hanging it on a wall right now - we're moving to Vermont in June so probably a stand of some kind would be fine. Do I need a techie to come and install this or can I do it myself, keeping in mind that I used to be a techie?

ETA: Hmm, Amazon won't let me see the price of that similar TV until I actually checkout. Not ready to do that.

That threw me for a sec, too. You don't have to actually check out. Just "proceed to checkout." You can then remove the item from your cart. It's $355 and change.

The only head-scratcher in setting it up for me was that my TiVo sat on top of my old CRT, and of course can't sit on top of this. :-) I decided this was probably light enough to sit on top of the TiVo. (Don't tell TiVo. I bet they'd disapprove.) I also had to attach the base and screw in the associated screws. Easy enough.

I think you'll likely be able to figure it out, but if not, there's probably a ten-year-old neighbor kid you could pay to help.

Ah, thanks for checking! I'm seeing some good deals at Sears this weekend which might be worth checking out in person.

Silly question: Do they come with a stand or do I have to purchase one separately? I know you can all kinds of fancy stuff for them, but do they come with just a basic stand?

We have the 46" Sony Bravia and it's AWESOME. We love it.

Just sayin'.

I don't think I can go that big this time, but this set will be for our bedroom so 46' might be overkill. Once we move to Vermont and I have some spare cash, I will buy a bigger one for the living room. But thanks for the recommendation - the Sonys look really nice!

I'm very iffy about Sony stuff in general (and I used to work there) - it seems like their entry level stuff is utter garbage, their top-level stuff is amazing but completely unaffordable, and they don't have a midrange product.

The Bravias I'd say are an exception to this. We shopped for an HDTV for over 2 years and looked at everything. The Bravias were consistently the best picture quality, best expansion, and best price for the quality. We're very happy with it and would definitely buy again.

I will indeed post the results. I'm going to take off shopping in a little while. David was SUPPOSED to be going off to meet with a client this afternoon so I could do all this with a minimum of subterfuge, but the weather is crap here and he decided to cancel. O well. I have a backup plan.
