This year Jack and I went with my family to celebrate the forth in my mother's hometown of Holton Kansas, a little berg about 20 minutes north of Topeka. My mom just moved back to the area after living out of state for over 10 years, so we wanted the family together ( Read more... )

This is what keeps us believing in Kansas even though it's going to hell politically.

I did a similar thing this weekend, only my carefree place is about four miles east of Wichita. We went up on the roof of the barn and watched the fireworks from Andover, Rose Hill, and the Crestview Country Club.

I miss the place, but know full well that in 10 or 15 years it'll be just another neo-Tuscan strip mall.

Well, that is the beauty of Kansas as a child- you know not of politics or suburban blight or potholes.

Maybe that's why everybody says it's a good place to raise your kids. It's just a shitty place to be an adult.
