Time as God and Making Friends in High Places

This morning I woke with a strange thought in my head. Why do we not worship Time? Time is immutable- ever constant. It is an abstract concept, but no more abstract than Faith. We can understand Time’s passing and feel its effect as we move through it. We have regimented our entire being into seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, quarters, years, decades, generations, and lifetimes. We define our lives by it; sleeping to waking, seasons wheeling from cold to warm and back again, relationships, purpose- all bound by the same law. It is an invisible hand urging us to our inevitable completion. Everything in our existence bows to Time.

We come into the world with nothing but time. We pass from the world when our time is up.

Why, then, is there no theology centered in such a powerful force?

Anyway, good news- the Toastmasters Bosses Day Luncheon went very well. All three Aflac clubs worked very hard over the past few months to organize the event. My role was to organize the invitations for management. I thought it was interesting that I got to take on a role very similar to what Christy does every day. I would say that I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for event planning. It was easy insofar as writing the invitation email, managing the list of invitees, and sending out the RSVP in Outlook. From that point it was like herding cats.

But the event was excellent. We had about sixty guests, all management, and the luncheon really showcased the skill and perseverance that has been cultivated within our clubs. I’d like to think that the managers got more than cafeteria beef tips and rice out of the hour they were there. I gave one of the three speeches, in which I tell them I have a bone to pick with the company because working for such an ethical company makes it really hard to talk about the recession with my friends. I describe a situation in which I had poor support and no job security in a previous work environment and then compared it to my work now. It went over well.

After the luncheon was over I was approached by the Senior VP of Customer Assurance (my boss’ boss’ boss) who said she was very impressed. I also spoke briefly with a manager in Admin Training who suggested that I contact her for voice work needed in Aflac training videos. Score! And because I had spoken about an experience I’d had in Japan, she put me in touch with the people who organize Aflac’s Japanese Relations events. It might be nice to get involved with that, so we’re having a meet and greet on Monday. So really, I feel like I won the Toastmasters Luncheon.
